The Math and Computer Science building at the University of Waterloo houses the world's largest Faculty of Mathematics.
The Math and Computer Science building at the University of Waterloo houses the world's largest Faculty of Mathematics.

The University of Waterloo, located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, is a comprehensive public university that was founded in 1957 by Drs. Gerry Hagey and Ira G. Needles.[1] It has grown to an institution of more than 30,000 students, faculty, and staff.[2] The school is notable for being the first accredited university in North America to create a Faculty of Mathematics (which is now the world's largest),[3][4] and to have the largest co-op program in the world.[5] The school is also known for having more company spin-offs than any other Canadian university, and as such, the university has been called the "Silicon Valley of the North".[6]

The list is drawn from faculty, alumni, staff, and former University presidents. The enrollment for 2007 was 24,342 undergraduate and 3,636 graduate students, with 977 full-time faculty members and 2,251 staff. The school has approximately 135,000 alumni in 140 countries.[2] A large number of the university's alumni were enrolled in the Faculty of Mathematics because it has become a "magnet for theoreticians and students alike".[7]
