Thanks very much for your help at Catalan language. Just in case it wasn't clear: the bad English wasn't mine. The passage was originally (poorly) written, presumably by a Catalan speaker with poor English; I had copy edited what I could, but the phrases I marked were so messed up that I couldn't get the sense of them to fix them. Re: your comments on Ternary. For even bases, you can have both positive and negative digits (although you can't actually balance them, of course). So for example you could have base four with the digits 2, 1, 0, -1. Counting then looks like

I'm unaware of them having any practical use, and the only place I've ever seen them investigated is people playing with repeating "decimal" expansions. If you are interested in playing in that area, you might also think about things like negabinary (used in some obscure Russian computer). If you get into seriously playing with balanced even bases and repeating "decimals", tell me and I'll put you in touch with someone that plays with them.
