In English, "Lina" is a shortened form of Angelina or Carolina.
Lina is a common female name in Sweden, especially among those born after 1980. It was initially used as a shortened form of names such as Carolina, Nikolina, Adelina and Evelina but eventually became a name in its own right. Since -lina is a diminutive suffix, it has no meaning of its own in Swedish.
Lina is also a female name used in Arabic. Its main meaning is 'tender' or 'tenderness.' It also refers to a small young palm tree in Arabic.
Lina is the name of the maid in Astrid Lindgren's stories of Emil i Lönneberga (Emil of Maple Hill]].
