Lex Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lex Records

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lex Records is an independent record label founded by Tom Brown in 2001. The label was initially financed by Warp Records and run from their North London offices. In September 2005 Lex and Warp became separate companies.

Initially Lex was intended to be a small label only releasing 12" vinyl EPs. These were released in the distinctive 'Lexolea' house-sleeves.

Several of the artists approached by Lex to deliver music for an EP offered Lex full length albums instead. By the Autumn of 2002 Lex began releasing albums and the A&R focus changed from looking for artists to provide a few minutes of music for an EP, to looking for long term artists that had the potential to make albums and work with the label over a period of years.

Lex Records currently releases music that crosses a number of genres including hip hop, art rock and electronica. The permanent roster includes Andrew Broder's band Fog, Boom Bip, Doseone's sextet Subtle, Jneiro Jarel in his guise as Dr. Who Dat? and his group Shape of Broad Minds and DJ Danger Mouse. Danger Mouse is a record producer best known for The Grey Album, The Gorillaz album Demon Days, his album with Jemini Ghetto Pop Life, and his collaboration with MF DOOM under the name Dangerdoom. Most recently, he has enjoyed huge commercial success as half of Gnarls Barkley, with Cee-Lo Green. The latest signing to Lex is Neon Neon, a collaboration between Boom Bip and Super Furry Animals front man, Gruff Rhys.

Other artists who have released albums on Lex Records include Organized Konfusion's Prince Po, Tes, Andrew Broder and Why?'s collaboration under the name Hymie's Basement, Sage Francis' group Non-Prophets and DJ Signify.

Lex Records packaging is striking and often elaborate. Nearly all the Lex print design is by EHQuestionmark.[citation needed]
