Fallen Empire: Legions (abbreviated to simply "Legions" or "FE:L") is an upcoming sci-fi first-person shooter (FPS) computer game by GarageGames. The GarageGames team is made of up many key members from Dynamix, the developers of Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2. Announced officially in January of 2007, Legions is being developed as a "spiritual successor" to Tribes,[1] lending many gameplay elements from the series, while aiming into a new direction. The key selling point of the game, like in Tribes, is the jetpack system, allowing the player to travel in all directions. A February trailer states "freedom of movement returns. 2008."

[edit] Gameplay
Many FPS players will find the slated modes and weapons familiar. The initial weapon plans for the beta are a chain gun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher and a charge-up laser rifle. Capture the Flag (CTF) and team or free-for-all deathmatch will be the game modes available for the open beta, providing a solid testing ground for core gameplay, physics, netcode, weapons, etc...[2]
While the modes and weapons may be familiar, Legions features extremely fast and unique game play with the jetting and skiing system. Unlike the Tribes series which featured a simple jet pack, the new jetting system has a floating mode that allows players to bank corners and pick up speed, along with a 6-direction jetting function for air control. Also shortly explained, but not yet fully implemented, are events like "overdrive" when the player reaches a certain speed.[3]

[edit] Loadouts
Loadout is the name used to describe the soldiers in Legions. There are currently six classes of Loadouts, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
Gunner: This is the standard class. It is very well suited for beginning players because of the diversity of its weapons. It is equipped with a chaingun, a rocket launcher, and a grenade launcher. It is the only class to be equipped with three weapons, but the disadvantage is that all three of the weapons are weaker and carry less ammo.
Sniper: This class is used by players who wish to snipe but to not be helpless in close combat. It is equipped with a laser sniper rifle and a grenade launcher. The disadvantage is that the laser rifle is weaker.
Sniper Specialist: This class is used by players who wish to focus on sniping. They have the same laser rifle as the Sniper but theirs is charges faster and the beam lasts longer. They are also equipped with a chaingun in case they are forced into close combat, but the chaingun is weaker and has less ammo.
Chaingun Specialist: This class is for players who feel that they are strongest with a chaingun in their hands. They are also equipped with a rocket launcher. The advantage to this class is that the chaingun is stronger than the standard chaingun, there is more ammo, and it takes less time to overheat.
Rocket Launcher Specialist: This class is for players that are especially adept to using a rocket launcher. Some advantages are more rocket ammo, a stronger rocket, and also the player has the ability to detonate the rocket after shooting it, so it can explode in midair instead of going until it hits something. They are also equipped with a standard chaingun.
Grenade Launcher Specialist: Similar to the Rocket Launcher Specialist, except grenades are this players weapon of choice. They have more grenades, stronger grenades, and the same ability as mentioned above to detonate their grenades in midair after shooting them. Their secondary weapon is also a chaingun.
A player may choose his class before the start of the match and change classes at any time during the match. A new player will usually start with the Gunner and as the play the game more they will begin to use a specific weapon more than others. When this happens they will probably change to the Loadout that has more benefits for their weapon of choice.
[edit] Ammunition
The player starts the match with full ammo for each of its weapons. For the Gunner, this is 300 chaingun bullets, 20 rockets, and 16 grenades. When a player dies, unlike some other shooting games, they don't drop any ammo or weapons. The only way to replenish ammo are at ammo "boxes" throughout the map. These are small, stationary boxes that will instantly and completely replenish a player's ammo when they stand in front of it. In the current maps their are a small number of these boxes placed in each teams base and on a few towers throughout the map.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Fallen Empire: Legions is the community development. With the history of Tribes behind Legions, the five-man development team has decided to take more of a conductor position, guiding along community voted changes. Many popular weapons and item ideas like the mortar and mines have been left out of the beta, but are certainly open to addition through voting.[4]
