Law enforcement in Austria is the responsibility of the Directorate General for Public Security, a subdivision of the Federal Ministry of the Interior located at Herrengasse 7 in Vienna.
Law enforcement in Austria underwent restructuring on July 1st 2005. The public security police, the criminal investigation service and the Bundesgendarmerie were consolidated and organized into nine federal provincial commands. [1]
Over 20,000 police officers are on duty in the Federal Police at more than 1,000 police stations. On lakes and rivers the federal police has over 70 boats and other craft to act as the Water police.

- Federal Investigation Bureau (German: Bundeskriminalamt)
- Federal Police (German: Bundespolizei) - divided into 83 district police commands and 27 city police commands
- Municipal Police - in 21 cities, but only have administrative rights
- Air Police (German: Flugpolizei)
- Prison Guard (German: Justizwache) - responsible for prisons and prisoner transports
- Justizwache Einsatz Gruppe (JEG): special force for prisons in case of emergency
