The LaserWriter 8500 is a laser printer manufactured and sold by Apple Inc.. This printer is the last version printer of the black and white LaserWriter series. In fact, it is the model with the fastest processor, most memory and best PostScript interpreter out of all the black and white models. This printer also prints pages in A3 as well as A4 format. The printer was supplied with a SCSI port to enable the storage of fonts on an external hard disk attached to the printer. Local storage of fonts speeds up all printing, especially of A3 pages, by avoiding the need to download fonts. Note the printer cannot be connected to a PC or Mac via the SCSI port.

Drivers are currently built into Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X for the Ethernet protocol and OS 9 for LocalTalk. The simplest way of connecting a PC is to use an IEEE 1284-C compatible Micro-Centronics parallel cable, however there are reportedly ways of connecting via Ethernet. Status of Linux drivers unknown at the time of writing.

Apple's new premiere monochrome, professional-quality workgroup printing solution, the Apple LaserWriter 8500 brings ground-breaking advanced printing capabilities to Mac OS, Windows, and UNIX users. Print professionals will appreciate an exciting Apple first: support for full-bleed printing on various paper sizes, up to Ledger/A3 -- eliminating the rush to outside print houses for large format, full-bleed comps. Business workgroups will discover that the LaserWriter 8500's blazing speed and host of other easy-to-install paper handling options, such as the duplex printing unit, were designed to enhance their high-quality, high-volume printing efforts. Easily integrated into mixed computing environments and supporting most popular networking protocols, it has unique LaserWriter 8.5 IP printing software that enables you to print from remote locations using the Internet. For first class laser printing and functionality, choose the Apple LaserWriter 8500. Features

Apple's Competitive Advantage Using the leading edge page-description technology Adobe PostScript 3, the LaserWriter 8500 provides enhanced performance, superior image quality, and improved page processing over other laser printers. Compare the LaserWriter 8500 to the HP LaserJet 4MV or the Lexmark Optra N, and you will find that the competitive products are not available as single-box printing solutions. Neither the HP 4MV nor the Lexmark Optra N have PhotoGrade offer full-bleed, large format printing. In addition, the HP 4MV has a smaller paper capacity and fewer built-in fonts. Further, when you configure the competition's printers to match the Apple LaserWriter 8500's standard features, you will discover a price advantage of over $200 to $300 with the Apple LaserWriter 8500. Finally, the LaserWriter 8500 comes bundled with Apple printer software plus third-party software including, Nova's Art Explosion Sampler, Now Up to Date and Contact, ATM, plus Adobe Acrobat Reader.
