The Land Rover G4 Challenge is the follow-on 4x4 adventure event of the Camel Trophy The Camel Trophy was driven between 1980 and 2000. In 2003, after a 3-year gap, competitors from 16 nations started the first G4 challenge, the ultimate global 4X4 adventure. The G4 challenge is a test of skill, physical and mental agility, performed in 4 separate stages, each in a different time zone. Each team consists of 2 people and the winner gets a top-of-the-range Land Rover Range Rover.
G4 Challenge locations and winners:
1st edition : 2003 : USA, Canada, South-Africa, Australia : Rudi Thoelen (Belgium)
2nd edition : 2006 : Thailand, Laos, Brasil, Bolivia : Martin Dreyer (South-Africa)
The next G4 Challenge is to be held during 2008/2009, held for 60th anniversary of Land Rover and applications have recently opened for the event.
Land Rover started disposing of the vehicles used in the challenges shortly after each event and although some were crushed, many of these are now in private hands, leading to the creation of the G4 Owners Club in early 2007. The G4 Owners Club now boasts over 100 members including ex-challenge competitors and has examples of every vehicle that participated in the Challenge Event.
