[edit] Dams causing floods!
Why dams are constructed in the first place. It is to avoid floods during rains. But what actually is happening. Take the example of Karnataka and Tamilnadu in India. In Karnataka water is stored in Krishnaraja Sagara Dam. Few gates are opened commensurate to the incoming flow of water from catchment areas. They open other gates when it is in full and if there is heavy rains in catchment areas. During other times water is just stored.
In Tamilnadu Mettur Dam is kept closed and is opened only when the incoming flow of water is in abundant. When the dam is in full during rains many gates are opened.
What happens by this type of MANAGEMENT is people suffer during the mean days when there is no rain. The much needed water is being stored in Dams. During rainy season this same dam is opened to such an full extent that people suffer due to floods.
Taking all this into account why not dams be used henceforth not for storing any water during mean days and start storing water ONLY during rainy season.
By this controlled way people will be always getting water year long and during rainy season they are saved from sudden floods.
To bring about this change only the highest Court of law can intervene and that is High Court of Karnataka and High court of Tamilnadu. People can file a PIL in these court and make the above governments to manage dams in this better way.
Keep all the gates of dams opened at all times and close the gates only to control floods and not to create floods.
