KXLT-TV is the Fox affiliate in Rochester, Minnesota. It broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 8 and digital signal on UHF channel 8. KXLT is owned by SagamoreHill Broadcasting and is operated via a shared services agreement by Quincy Newspapers, owners of NBC affiliate KTTC.
[edit] History
KXLT signed on in the late-1980s as a simulcast of St. Cloud-based independent station KXLI, which largely broadcast low-budget programming and infomercials. KXLI and KXLT were sold to Paxson Communications in 1996 which converted both stations to an all-infomercial format under Paxson's inTV network. During the KXLI simulcast, the station operated at a lower-than-licensed power level given the financial difficulties that KXLI faced prior to Paxson's purchase.
In 1997, Paxson decided to sell KXLT to raise money to launch the Pax TV network (today's ION). Late that year, Shockley Communications purchased KXLT and on January 19, 1998 KXLT became the Fox affiliate for the market, previously either WFTC from Minneapolis or KDSM from Des Moines were carried on cable. Shockley instantly invested in the station, upgrading it to full power operations and moving to new studios in November of that year.
In 2001, Shockley Communications was bought by Quincy Newspapers, owners of KTTC with Shockley retaining KXLT due to FCC restrictions. Nevertheless, Quincy would begin an involvement in KXLT by setting up a shared services agreement with KTTC which allows KTTC to have some operations of the station. The arrangement also gave the Rochester/Austin/Mason City/Albert Lea market its first 9:00 p.m. newscast. Shockley would later sell the station to current owners SagamoreHill Broadcasting in 2005.
