KMIR-TV (Channel 36, cable 6) is an NBC-affiliated television station located in Palm Desert, California. Its signal covers most of the Coachella Valley, including Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Indio.
John Conte (actor) owned KMIR-TV before Journal Broadcast Group purchased the station in 1999. KMIR-TV was the first television station to go on the air exclusively serving Palm Springs market. Mr. Conte also owned the El Mirador hotel in Palm Springs, giving the station the call letters K(MIR). Desert Regional Medical Center now occupies the site of the old El Mirador hotel. Today, you can still see the El Mirador Tower standing in front of the hospital. This is where the station originally broadcasted from.
Like its major competitors in the market, KMIR uses its cable designation in its branding (KMIR 6), rather than its over-the-air channel. The unusual practice is also common in the Fort Myers / Naples, Florida market, where Journal Broadcast Group (coincidentally) owns FOX-affiliated station WFTX.
