Kevin McCollum is one the leading producers on Broadway. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 1984 and was co-producer of the musical Rent in 1996. That year the play won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score and Best Featured Actor. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it only the fifth musical to ever win both the Pulitzer and the Tony. It also took the Best Musical honors with the Drama Desk Awards.

In 2006, his company, The Producing Office, also produced The Drowsy Chaperone, which received the Drama Desk award for Best Musical and five Tony Awards. In the end, the play received seven Drama Desk awards out of 14 nominations and 13 Tony nominations. Two years earlier, in 2004, his company produced the musical Avenue Q, which won three Tony Awards in 2004 -- Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score.
