KCMD (970 AM) is a radio station located in Downtown Portland, Oregon and is a owned by CBS Radio. In 2005 after the flip of the city's Hot Talk station, MAX 910, to oldies, CBS Radio saw an opportinity to re-tool KCMD, to appeal to a larger audience. As a result, KCMD began to broadcast major syndicated programs, including The Tom Leykis Show and Don and Mike that had been previously broadcasted by MAX910. By early 2006, CBS radio, reacting to the strength of support shown by fans in the Portland area, for The Rick Emerson Show, which had been dumped from Entercom Broadcasting line-up on MAX 910, decided to give Rick Emerson (Three Time Winner of Oregon Entertainer of the Year 2006-2008), an opportunity to re-tool Johnson 970. Emerson went back on air as the local flagship show, along with on air producer Sarah X Dylan and newsman Tim Riley. Within months Johnson 970 was retool as “AM 970 “Solid State Radio”, and took on more syndicated broadcasts from around the country, including Dennis Miller.
Since the launch of AM 970 “Solid State Radio”, the station has added local weekend show Miles Around, and is also the affiliate for Dr. Demento, The Mike O'Meara Show, and The John and Jeff Show, as well as syndicating Fox Sports Radio.
[edit] Listener Club
The listener club for KCMD is called the "Glorious Bastards". This name was brainstormed during the Rick Emerson Show in late 2006. According to Rick, CBS Radio Portland is not happy with the name because of its use of the word "bastard", however they have been unwilling to change it, since the listeners have adopted it as a description of themselves.
[edit] Rewards
Each Thursday during the Rick Emerson Show a member of the "Glorious Bastards" is selected as the "Glorious Bastard of the Week". Rick then briefly lists what the listener has won from the "AM970 Bag of Crap" (materials from past promotions). There is no need for the listener to call in to claim the prize only to pick up the materials whenever it is convenient for them. However, a large number of listeners live out of the area (thanks to podcasts and the live stream), if those listeners end up being winners, their prizes are usually shipped to them.
[edit] Weekly visits
Each Wednesday evening, Rick Emerson and some account executives travel around the Portland area to visit different "Glorious Bastards" and thank them for listening. Sometimes they bring prizes to share, other times the listeners are just thrilled to be acknowledged. After meeting with the selected "Glorious Bastard" Rick will often attempt to meet their neighbors in an attempt to spread good will and hopefully encourage them to also listen to the station.
