[edit] Re:Protection requestFull protection is used to force a cool-off when there's an edit war between several parties, not just two. It doesn't make sense to lock almost every editor out of these articles because two users have a dispute. When there's only two, the edit warring is limited substantially by the three-revert rule. Therefore, it's best to solve the problems that way and not force other users to take a break from the article by protecting it. Heimstern Läufer 06:57, 5 May 2007 (UTC) [edit] AlohaAloha e! Thank you for your note. I'm happy to have your help in finding middle ground, and greatly appreciate your kind and gentle words. Insofar as the disagreements I've been having lately with others on some of the Hawaii based articles, most of them seem to be based on context. On the one hand, you have people who believe that things like the Apology Resolution are factual accounts of history. Once you believe that, and have internalized that as a world-view, my challenges and edits seem irrational and rude. On the other hand, you have people who have read not only the post-1970 "Hawaiian Renaissance" literature, which has led people to believe that the U.S. overthrew and imprisoned Liliuokalani, but have been curious enough to go back to the source materials from the time, and have been skeptical of layers of interpretation. Not to say that there aren't those who have a pro-sovereignty viewpoint who are very well read on the subject, but one can safely say that they maintain their POV by dismissing a large body of history as propaganda. That being said, how do we proceed together? My challenge is that I want to go to a level of depth greater than perhaps others are willing to - for example, some may just want to cite PL103-150, and declare it as historical fact, when I want to illustrate very clearly that such interpretations do not represent the only POV or even the correct POV necessarily. I contradict many of the basic assumptions believed by other editors here, and by a host of pro-sovereignty sources. This kind of opposition definitely rubs people the wrong way, but I cannot be pono and remain silent. On your user page, you say you support an independent nation of Hawaii, and do not approve of the 1893 Hawaiian Revolution. Imagine your answers to a few of these questions:
I don't ask these questions to challenge your support for an independent nation of Hawaii, but to help you realize that depending on what one believes those answers are, one may have a rationally differing opinion. And so my arguments with the others often end up emotional - and my task is to try to bring the conversation around to verifiable citations, and NPOV language and presentation. I think together we can get over our disagreements (although there will always be new faces joining in who start things up again), and appreciate your help in maintaining tone and dealing with specific citations. As a haole who has come to our islands recently, and integrated into the life, land and culture, I hope you can imagine that the people of the 1800s, from John Young who helped Kamehameha unify the islands, to the missionaries who arrived in 1820 and spread Christianity with the blessing of Ka'ahumanu, to all the other immigrants to the islands during that time, up to and including folk like Lorrin Thurston, Sanford Dole and William Richards Castle who helped unite us with the United States, all had the same mana in their hearts as you have in yours. Although it may seem unbelievable to you, even Liliuokalani saw hope for her people being a part of the United States, and proudly flew the American flag over her home in 1917 to honor native Hawaiian-American sailors who fell in the Great War. If, as per Wikipedia, we assumed good faith about all of the people involved in the Hawaiian Revolution of 1893, I think the story is much richer, more realistic, and a greater honor to the human spirits they characterized. Mahalo for your kokua! --JereKrischel 07:42, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] PortalYou're thanking me? No, I should be thanking you. I've been putting off the portal for a long time. Next, we need to work on project departments, project newsletter, etc. If music is your passion, would you be interested in organizing an "Arts and Entertainment" department, or something similar? We need to start forming groups so we can improve the articles and collaborate with related projects. Let's talk about this some more. —Viriditas | Talk 04:43, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page ProtectionAloha! First of all, you're doing a great job on Wikipedia! Been through your user page; you sound like an interesting guy. In answer to your question, if you believe a page needs page protection due to edit wars, just leave a note with the title of the article in question on my talk page and I will place a page protection lock on the article. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask! Thanks. Jers --Gerald Farinas 14:40, 15 May 2007 (UTC) [edit] Image:Hawaii Coat of Arms.gifHello, Kanaka maoli i puuwai. The project desperately needs a new sidebar that is easy on the eyes, informative, and easy to update. Let's discuss a design on the sidebar talk page when you have some free time. It might help if you also look around at the navigational sidebars that other projects are using. —Viriditas | Talk 08:23, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Categories, okina, etc...If you want to make your life easier, you can request permission to use WP:AWB for categorizing Hawaii-related articles and adding okina's automatically. Believe me, you'll love it. —Viriditas | Talk 10:04, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hawaiian PidginHawaiian Pidgin needs some help. User:Ptcamn just removed some unsourced content [1] and added a {{verify}} tag.[2] I will try and improve the article as time permits. —Viriditas | Talk 02:22, 23 May 2007 (UTC) [edit] AutoWikiBrowserThank you for your recent application to use AutoWikiBrowser. Regrettably, I have declined your request as you do not have 500 mainspace edits. You are welcome to apply again at a later time. Feel free to contact me with any questions, alphachimp 03:53, 23 May 2007 (UTC) [edit] Sistah?About AutoWikiBrowser; the user denied you because you don't have at least 500 mainspace edits. Although I would, without doubt, accept you, you may need to reach that minimum before applying again. Happy editing! Sr13 05:03, 23 May 2007 (UTC) [edit] OutreachI removed the new kokua section on the Portal. We're not supposed to use the Portal (or any part of Wikipedia outside of userspace and talk pages) to refer to itself (see WP:WIAFPo and WP:SELFREF). Use Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Outreach instead. Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Newsletters may be of some help. Let's work together on this. —Viriditas | Talk 03:56, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hawaiian diacriticsDon't know if you've seen this, but as a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii, you might want to comment on the current proposal in the Wikiproject Hawaii MOS [3]; User:Erudy has posted a "modest proposal" to completely eliminate all diacritics from Hawaiian articles, except for a citation at the beginning. Right now there are only 4 comments, evenly split. As far as I can tell all of those supporting it haven't contributed to Hawaiian articles, so it would be disturbing if they claimed victory when hardly anyone who is actually from or connected to Hawaiʻi has put in their voice.
