[edit] History

Juxtaposition Global Health Magazine (JGHM) is the University of Toronto's premiere peer-reviewed journalistic student publication on global health, in association with the Centre for International Health. With a special emphasis on topics that particularly impact the poor and marginalized internationally, Juxtaposition explores the essential health issues of our time in a novel and dynamic forum. The name "Juxtaposition" comes from the verb to juxtapose, defined as "the act or instance of placing two or more things side by side." Wherever possible, Juxtaposition seeks to include contrasting perspectives on global health issues in a wider social, economic, political and legal context.

Originally started as an online magazine (Juxtaposition eZine), Juxtaposition was founded by two University of Toronto alumni, Kadia Petricca and Michelle Chakkalackal in 2003. During the 2006/07 academic year, Juxtaposition went through a vigorous process of restructuring and institutionalizing which aimed to prepare the journal for future expansion and growth.

[edit] Mandate

The magazine was created to highlight the social, political, legal, economic and medical issues that are affecting the health of people throughout the world. “Juxtaposition” comes from the verb to juxtapose, defined as “the act or instance of placing two or more things side by side.” Correspondingly, the magazine aims to contrast perspectives raised by different disciplines, such as engineering, law, economics, medical anthropology, business, and health sciences, and to explore global health issues in a thought-provoking manner.

The objectives of Juxtaposition Global Health Magazine are to:

  a) critically analyze and promote dialogue about both ‘conventional’ global health issues and ‘non-conventional’ issues;
  b) provide a forum for student led dissemination of global health information;
  c) promote and showcase the work and research of faculty, staff and students in global health taking place through the University of Toronto;
  d) raise awareness of global health issues among the University of Toronto community: student, faculty, and staff;
  e) promote an interdisciplinary approach in problem solving for global health concerns that encourages non-medical disciplines to liaise with medical disciplines; and,
  f) To provide unique leadership opportunities for students, faculty and alumni in the field of international health and media publications

[edit] Structure

Juxtaposition's organizational structure consists of an Editorial Board which oversees the operation of the Magazine's Editorial Division and Production/Publicity/Sponsorship Division. Each division has its own Editor-in-Chief.
