[edit] Wrong Physics

The following note is frequently added by an annonymous editor:

"Note that Balseiro's report against Richter (1952)[1] is unable to reasonably describe the optimum non controversial Muon-catalyzed fusion temperature as described in Rafelski, et.al. "Cold Nuclear Fusion". Scientific American, 257, 1987, p. 84. Those authors reported an experimentally measured optimum reaction temperature near 900ºC."

This is a misunderstanding. The physics when using muons is different than when only normal electrons are present, so that muon catalyzed fusion needs to be adressed differently. Because muons where NOT present in Richter's experiment, Balseiro's calculations are correct.

Please clarify to what report you are refering and who is Isnardi. Balseiro's report is a response and a criticism of Richter's experiment, and if it has nothing to do with Nuclear Physics it is because Richter's ideas do not apply to Nuclear Physics either. Luzu 12:31, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I find the above paragraph slightly offensive. I have not accused you of vandalizing Wikipedia in the above, however, you seem to be very set on a POV against Balseiro and people working at Instituto Balseiro. On the other hand, I insist that muon catalyzed fusion has nothing to do with Richter's experiment and it is wrong physics to claim that it invalidates Balseiro's analysis. Muons are short lived particles, much more massive than an electron, but otherwise very similar. A Muon can bind to an hydrogen molecule, replacing one electron. It then brings both hydrogen atoms closer, as can be seen by solving the corresponding Hamiltonian. Because the hydrogen nucleai are now closer together they can tunnel more easily across the Coulomb barrier that inhibits fusion of the nuclei. This process is repeated during the lifetime of the Muon, but not many times, unfortunately not long enough to recover the energy needed to produce the unstable Muon in the first place. All these considerations could not be made in the 1950's, because Muon catalyzed fusion was discovered later.
