Joseph Crawhall II
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Crawhall II (1821–1896) was born at West House, Newcastle.
Crawhall, like his father (also Joseph), a Newcastle ropemaker, was interested in writing and water-colour painting. He went on to produce many books, illustrated by himself. His first (printed by himself in 1859) was entitled The Compleatest Angling Booke That Ever was Writ. The second edition (printed in 1881) contained illustrations from his son, Joseph Crawhall and James Guthrie (1859–1930).
Crawhall was a friend of Charles Keene (1823–1891), illustrator of Punch, and they worked together for over 200 drawings for the journal. There are 21 albums of these drawings in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
