Jonathan "Jon" Parkin (born December 30, 1981 in Barnsley, South Yorkshire) is an English footballer, currently playing for Stoke City. His nickname is "The Beast", and it comes from his sheer size and physical presence. "Feed The Beast and he will score!" is a joyful chant from the fans. The nickname originates from his time with York.

[edit] Career

Parkin, a defender turned striker and a prodigious swimmer as a child, was a product of the Barnsley youth system and made his home town debut at the age of 17 against Hartlepool United, having chosen between the two sports he loved. But after only 13 games for Barnsley, he moved to Hartlepool on loan before making a more permanent move to Terry Dolan's York City.

Parkin scored 15 goals in 87 appearances for York, despite sometimes playing in a central defensive role. After nearly two years with the club, he moved to Macclesfield Town in February 2004, after York told him they wouldn't be able to offer him the same pay deal for the 2004–05 season.[1] In the 2004–05 season, he scored 26 goals in all competitions for the Silkmen, which was a new club record. By this time he was playing solely as a forward.

At the start of the 2005–06 season, Parkin had an injury to his knee which stopped him from playing until October. But in the short space of time between October and January, he scored 9 times in 15 games. In January 2006, Hull City signed him on an 18-month deal,[2] and he marked his debut with a goal against Crystal Palace.[3] He finished the 2005–06 season with five goals in 19 games for Hull.[3] This, along with his towering position upfront, helped Hull City stay clear of the relegation zone, finishing in 18th place and avoiding relegation by 10 points. In the opening month of the 2006-07 season, he was the only Hull City player to score in the League, with 3 goals in their first 5 games.

Parkin was loaned out to Stoke City for the remainder of the 2006-07 season in March 2007.[4] Parkin was recalled by Hull City from his loan at Stoke City on 10 April 2007.[5] On June 20, 2007, Parkin signed for Stoke City in an initial £275,000 deal, which could rise to £450,000 in the future, depending on his and Stoke City's success.[6]
