Jokerman 8, by Richard Melo, is a novel of so-called eco-terrorists whose aim is to hurt no one. It was published in 2004 by Soft Skull Press and received reviews in The Oregonian, The Believer, and other print and online periodicals. Set in Oregon and California, the novel resembles works by Tom Robbins in its revelry and crazy wisdom and Ken Kesey in its sprawling Pacific Northwest landscapes. However, the novel is closer in spirit to The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey than any other. The novel is also noted for its evocation of the Beatles and U2 (in particular, The Joshua Tree album). A graduate of San Francisco State University, author Richard Melo lives in Portland, Oregon. His fiction has appeared in Willamette Week and Gobshite Quarterly.
