[edit] Greetings

Greetings John!Shaw, Stephen 14:37, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Greetings

Not too bad. I'm not going on summer camp, but I'll probably drop by sometime in September (for beaver-related things). Sweden eh? I have some friends going there next week. Maybe it's the place to be right now.

[edit] More Greetings

I leave for it on Friday week. Depending on the internet “facilities” and the person operating them (remember NorJam?) I should be able to keep you posted. Shaw, Stephen 11:33, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Incorrect spelling of Gaeilge

Hey John,

I know that "gaedhilge" was shortened to "gaeilge" by the caighdeán oifigiúil, but by "incorrect" I mean spelling the modern word "gaeilge" as "gaelige". To my knowledge that's a typo rather than a regional difference.

On wikipedia I try to enforce standard spelling (unless it's lyrics from a song or a quote from an old document or something).

That mission arose from the remarkable amount of incorrect Irish displayed in public. I can't describe the despair I feel when I'm cycling home and see "Raon Rothár". One sign says "Rothár", the next says "Rothar" and the next just says "Cycle Track" without any Irish at all. How can there be spelling mistakes? I could understand if it was missing a fada, but this is amazing. They actually went to the trouble of putting one in. Surely they just print off copies of the one sign from a master?

Yesterday we were going to Ballyogan recycling park. On signs for Sandyford I saw about five variations: Áth an Gainimh, Ath na Gainimh, Atha an Gainimh, Atha na Gáinimh, etc. It's as if the guy who's making the sign is thinking to himself "Yeah, hmm. I know there's meant to be a fada in there somewhere. I'll just shove it in anywhere and hope for the best".

There are weight restriction signs on the Rathfarnham Road. On one side it says "ceantar" and on the other it says "ceanter". Why? How hard can it be to make two identical, correct signs.

Anyway, enough ranting. If you find any of my previous edits that may have been in error, let me know.

By the way, I have a mac-related question for you that I'll send by email.
