I am investigating all placenames with 'Temple' as this indicates a likely Knights Templar preceptory - though I intend to differentiate between the tradition and the evidence.

Wikipedia policy is to use most common names recognized by English speakers. That's why the Kings of Israel should be Saul, David, Solomon, not Shaul, Daoud, Shmuel. In reply to the recent message in my talk page from RickK, I must reiterate once again that I will not be changing any English names. I have never implied that I would be doing so - in all circumstances any edits I make will include the foreign text in addition to the existing English names. Please do not go through all the Australian state governor lists putting "His Excellency" in front of their names. As was discussed in relation to the Governor-General lists, this makes the lists sound pompous and anachronistic. Well, if you rewrite these lists (which I complied) so that they look like something out of Debretts, I will revert them.
Furthermore, re Heads of State of Australia, this whole article is completely misconceived. Australia did not have a head of state until the adoption of the Statute of Westminster in 1942, because it was not a sovereign state, it was a self-governing Dominion of the British Empire. The idea that Queen Victoria was "Queen of the Commonwealth of Australia" is completely ahistorical and anachronistic, and would have been laughed at in 1901. The title "Queen of Australia" (not "Queen of the Commonwealth of Australia") was not created until 1973. Adam 16:39, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

On the Wikipedia edit page it does say that "If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then do not submit it."
I notice that today I have a banner asking me to consider donating to the Wikipedia - I was considering it, but there is little point if no-one likes what I write.
However, that said:-
Of course you are correct re the style of the monarch etc., and I would have corrected my errors shortly. However as you are so against the very style you may revert if you wish, however would you allow me to have my pompous and anachronistic page elsewhere on the Wikipedia?
I do think that it is of certain interest to see how the styles develop over time, and there may (hopefully) come a day when Australia and Great Britain (my two nationalities) have a republican constitution, and then the styles and titles will change completely.

John, I don't mean to be unpleasant and I don't want to discourage you from contributing. But my view and the view of others was that you were making the tables of GGs and Governors over-elaborate by including all these Imperial trimmings such as "His Excellency" and "The Right Honourable" etc etc. I would not recommend you be pompous and anachronistic anywhere at Wikipedia, but if you do at Australian history-related articles I will always be watching, so you might do better to find another area to contribute in. Could I suggest then that you write sections on "the changing styles and titles of Governors-General of Australia", Governors of NSW, etc, and add them to the relevant articles, rather than edit the actual lists in the way you have been doing? I think I have the same concerns as Rick and Adam C., but about Principality of Achaea. I fixed up the table a bit to make it easier to read, but is it really necessary at all? Especially "contemporary regnal name," which is just their un-Anglicized name...seems kind of pointless, I mean. In reply - Not all Heads of Government are Prime Minister - therefore cannot be placed on a list of Prime Ministers. Therefore I have created Heads of Government pages to cover all Heads of Goverment - not just Prime Minister.
Although at present the HofGs of Angola have up to now been Prime Minister, this may not be the case in the future - so whilst the list of Prime Ministers may at that point come to an end, the list of Heads of Government will continue as long as the government continues."

The standard format for these articles here is President of x and Prime Minister of x, not "Head of State" or "Head of Government". Clearly we do not need duplicate lists for each country. - So what happens when (for instance) Angola has a Head of Government who is not a 'Prime Minister' or when the Head of State assumes the responsibilities of Head of Government as well. Is there then to be a separate list for each Head of Government who adopts a different title or standing? In all countries, the "head of government" is either (a) a monarch (eg, King of Saudi Arabia), (b) an executive president (eg, President of the United States), or (c) a prime minister formally appointed by the head of state (eg, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom). There are minor variants on this in some countries (eg, Chancellor of Germany). Most people will know that the way to find the head of government of any country is to go the main article on that country and find the link to its monarch, president or prime minister. For most countries there are also lists of the holders of these position (work which has already been done at Rulers by the way). - Hi, John. Thanks for getting back to me. I admit that Gzornenplatz is correct, but only to a point. The Bandit has been generating these bizarre little stubs for months on end, never fixes them, refuses to answer contact and has even vandalized other articles. If this was a new problem and not the ongoing one this has turned into, he'd be correct in defending the articles. Many of us have tried to reach the Bandit over the last several months to no avail. I have to say, I find your new rulers tables to be very difficult to use. They're too busy, too complicated to figure out what's going on. And you've removed information - British colonial administrators of Egypt, for instance, were removed in your revision. You also have included a lot of extraneous information. Isn't it just confusing to list Atef Ebaid in the Heads of State of Egypt list, just because he was acting president for a couple of days? What extra value does a list of a bunch of Ottoman-era governors of Egypt that we don't have articles on add, except to make the list harder to use, and make the actual well known rulers starting with Muhammad Ali harder to find? john k 18:54, 16 Sep 2004 (UTC)
My Muhammad Ali example was just to note that Muhammad Ali was a famous ruler of Egypt, and is usually seen as the first ruler of modern Egypt. But his existence is obscured by the current format of the list, which begins with several screens worth of Ottoman governors about whom we don't have articles. Perhaps the governors could be moved to List of Ottoman governors of Egypt, or some such? Also, you didn't address my question (on the egyptian heads of state page) about why you removed the word "modern" from the title. john k 19:59, 16 Sep 2004 (UTC)

An interesting way to respond to my merge requests, but I believe the custom is to use talk pages rather than dueling templates. :-)
Has there been any discussion about this elsewhere? The two lists in List of leaders of Afghanistan and Heads of Government of Afghanistan seem redundant and overlapping; it's confusing trying to figure out which one serves what purpose. Hi there, when I was creating the Template:Argentina infobox I did see your changes from President into Head of State and Head of Government that you did in the previous table that contained that info, but in Argentina the Head of State and Head of Government are the same person: the President. You might want to check the Cia factbook's Argentina entry and Head of Government. Fernández is the cabinet chief, but hasn't the responsabilities/powers that a Prime minister has. Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. - The reason I chose Rulers as the title was because it has generic connotation, as opposed to Monarch which, although it means sole ruler, is usually applied to Kings/emperors etc. rather than chiefs/princes etc.
- I felt that the use of generic terms in the titles would make it easier to determine what it was the listing was about rather than using a plethora of different styles or titles in the heading which would make it difficult to determine the actual status of a given incumbent and compare it with the status of an incumbent in another list. This is why I have gone down the route of dividing the lists into Heads of State, Heads of Government, Colonial Heads and Rulers.
- In its widest sense monarch could be also applied to any head of state, but I chose to use the term Head of State for the heads of sovereign or autonomous modern states, reserving Rulers for defunct states or modern tribal states or polities. --JohnArmagh 23:06, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

- My concern wasn't about the generic terms you're using in the articles you've created about african rulers (excellent work by the way), but more about the specific article Rulers of the Fon state of Danhome. The people in the list are almost all Monarchs (in the sense of being Kings and Queens). The wikistyle here would be to have a title with the word Monarch in (as in List of British monarchs, List of Swedish monarchs etc). Secondly, the words "of the Fon state" in the title seem unnecessary. Thirdly, Dahome is generally known as Dahomey. Would you be happy with "List of monarchs of Dahomey" or "List of Dahomean monarchs"? I just want to make thing consistent and simple - Xed 00:31, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

An archdiocese is the area under the diocesan authority of an archbishop; whereas a province is the area under the metropolitan authority of an archbishop, including his archdiocese and several other (suffragan) dioceses. For example, the Archdiocese of Liverpool covers greater Liverpool, but the Province of Liverpool covers most of northern England. The Diocese of Salford is in the Province of Liverpool, not the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. Can you list in the article any websites, books, or other sources that will allow people to verify the content in La Massana? You can simply add links, preferably as the inline citations, or see citation templates for different citation methods. Thanks! Something to back up those figures would be nice. Hi there, I've just been using your (really, really fantastic) table of Bamangwato chiefs. I've linked a few of the names to articles lurking under variant spellings, but I'm not sure I've done as you'd like because I don't fully understand the table. Am I right that the large text refers to official style/name, while the smaller text is the commonly used name? Btw, check out Temple Farm in Strood. THe article doesn't have much on it, but in fact all the "temple" names in Strood (Estate, School, Road) are from a Templar estate the house of which still exists amid the warehouses and industry down by the River Medway. Hi! I noticed that in your scratchpad / draft / alternative articles User:JohnArmagh/Concise List of Roman Emperors and User:JohnArmagh/List of Roman Emperors you had the categories still activated, so they were showing up in Category:Ancient Rome and others. John, noticed you have an image on the above in List of cathedrals in the United Kingdom. In the interest of accuracy, Spynie Church is unfortunately not on the site of the old cathedral but the stone that was in the old cathedral is indeed in this church. The site of the old cathedral is about 200 metres south of Spynie Castle where a small fragment of the wall is still existent. The stone was transported to the new church. Notice you have a little whinge on your home page about poor use of the English language.... well, at least I can't accuse you of being a WPB, because yer obviously not Pommie, whatever your accent, Mate!
I just rejigged your edits to Cathedral a tiny bit.... and now I'm gunna tellya one of my pet whinges. I can't stand blanky superfluous brackets! Here's a real bewdy! I wonder if you wrote it!
- "The word cathedral is derived from the Latin noun "cathedra" (seat or chair), and refers to the presence of the bishop's (or archbishop's) chair or throne. In the ancient world, the chair was the symbol of a teacher (and thus of the bishop's role as teacher), and also of an official presiding as a magistrate (and thus of the bishop's role in governing a diocese)."
I would write those sentences with only the first set of brackets. (seat or chair). I utilise brackets in that sort of way regularly, but I hate finding them around things like "(for example, at Strasbourg)" when "such as Strasbourg" says it equally well. So.....you know what I've done (without even looking)!

Hi John!
Your list of cathedrals is really good. I've just had a fiddle with it.... basically I've Wikified it by reversing the first two paragraphs so that the defintion now says what it is rather than beginning with what it isn't. And removed the first section heading because it was unnecessary and un-wiki. Plus a few minor tweaks so that it was less conversational.
So I hope you'll be happy with what I've done. Also, I read the discussion page and noticed comments about some buildings predating the CofE... well, regardless of that, the article is about cathedrals that are or were functional. These places that are listed under that heading have that current function within the CofE, so it's nonsense. If you were writing from some other historic standpoint, it would be different.
