[edit] Name Spelling

Assuming his middle name is after his mother's maiden name, it appears the correct spelling of is "Whitaker" and not "Whittaker". See these sources, where it is clear his mother's maiden name is spelled Whitaker:

Note also that he and William Whitaker Taylor were first cousins as well as half-brothers (their mothers were sisters) and William spelled it with one t.

I noticed that at the beginning of the article it says Taylor died in October, 1916. Near the bottom is says he was "posthumously baptized by proxy" in August, 1916. Anyone know which date is correct? ukforever 23:51, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Why was this moved from John W. Taylor (Mormon) to John W. Taylor (Latter-day Saint) without discussion? I thought there was a consensus that the appellation (Mormon) is approrpriate for persons who were notable primarily for their membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that the appellation (Latter Day Saints) was to be used for persons whose main notability was association with the pre-succession crisis split of the Latter Day Saint movement?? This uses neither—(Latter-day Saint) has never been a used appellation before ... I did the move, but having read the naming convention, I have moved it to (LDS Church) as to follow the naming conventions specified. I have noticed an exception proposed for naming of church leaders, but I oppose it and have proposed my own convention. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Latter Day Saints) and the talk page. Yes, the one that I was aware of is HERE. What's wrong will referring to someone as a "Mormon"? The LDS Church itself seems to accept it with "Mormon pioneers", "Mormon Tabernacle Choir", etc. I'll go there and see your comments. Rich Uncle Skeleton 06:23, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm unconvinced by your proposed naming scheme. I'm proposing that the article be moved back to John W. Taylor (Mormon) until a consensus is reached on if to change the policy. Rich Uncle Skeleton ^(talk) 10:18, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes, there's a proposal filed be me at Wikipedia:Requested_moves to move both back. I filed the requests because I thought the move back might be more controversial than they have proven to be. It might not be technically possible for you to move the other one back. I had to delete the redirect sitting on "(Mormon)" here. I might have been too hasty, and it would be worthwhile to see what outsiders might say about John Taylor. Delete this request because it's now moot, but we'll move both articles to match any consensus that might emerge on John Taylor. Cool Hand Luke 04:49, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

The problem with (Mormon) is that it is offensive to some Latter Day Saint groups like the Community of Christ. By say Mormon, you are saying that John W. Taylor is associated with the LDS Church which is correct, but ambigouous as he could also be assoicated with other Latter Day Saint movement groups, which is incorrect. I am against the term. I will also point out that the naming convention of biographies was established a short while ago without any real discussion, and it does not follow the naming convention of all other Latter Day Saint articles. I will also point out that this particular person is only associated with the LDS CHurch and as such (LDS Church) is perfectly acceptable. Bytebear 19:08, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Actually, "Mormon" is almost LDS Church-exclusive, whereas "Latter Day Saints" is a term used to be intentionally ambiguous. At least it should be "LDS Church leader" because we are not disambiguating Taylor's LDS Church; this follows Wikipedia convention on parenthetical disambiguation. I still don't understand how it's potentially "offensive" if used exclusively with persons related to the LDS Church. How will the Community of Christ members be offended if an LDS Church leader is called a "Mormon"? We would not use it for a Community of Christ leader. Am I missing something?
