Talk:John Joseph Clancy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Explaining two corrections to the article 'John Joseph Clancy'.

1. 'Carragh Lodge' (J. J. Clancy's birthplace) is a misprint for 'Carraghy Lodge'. This misprint is found in all of the main reference books (e.g. Who Was Who, Dod's Parliamentary Companion etc.). It seems to have started early on and been carried on between them. It is certainly a misprint, because William Clancy, J. J. Clancy's father, who is named in most of the reference books, is listed in Griffith's Valuation (taken about 1855) as having 80 acres in the townland of Carraghy, which is about 3 miles north of Claregalway. Furthermore, Carraghy Lodge still exists, beside the N17 Galway-Tuam road, and as of 2003 the Clancy family were still remembered in the neighbourhood. The Census records of 1901 and 1911 also show J. J. Clancy's younger brother at Carraghy. There is no 'Carragh' or Carragh Lodge' in the vicinity of Claregalway.

2. The article says that J. J. Clancy obtained a MA degree from the Royal University. This name was not in use at the time Clancy obtained his degree. It refers to a reorganization later in the nineteenth century. At the time Clancy graduated the official name was 'The Queen's University in Ireland', with constituent colleges at Belfast, Galway and Cork. The term 'Royal University' is not in use now - the current name is 'National University of Ireland'. J.J.Clancy was stated in some contemporary reference books as having a degree from the Royal University because that is the term that was in use at the time the reference books were compiled. It seems inappropriate to use it now and I have therefore deleted it.
