Talk:John Gallaher

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Articles for deletion This article was nominated for deletion on 7 April 2008. The result of the discussion was keep.

KEEP.

These arguments for deletion don't make any sense. John Gallaher has published two books--his second, The Little Book of Guesses, won the Levis Prize from Four Way Books. Contrary to what's been asserted here, the Levis Prize is a solidly important book prize from Four Way Books, which is indisputably one of the best poetry presses in the country (a nonprofit in NYC which has published many notable poets over the last decade, including Kevin Prufer and Sarah Manguso, both of whom are featured on Wikipedia). Gallaher is also the current editor of Greentower Press and the Laurel Review, which is an important literary magazine with a long history and, frankly, has only become more important (after a period of relative insignificance) since Gallaher took over as editor. Gallaher has published in Best American Poetry as well as in a long list of some of the most prominent poetry journals in the country (see entry, though the list is not an exhaustive one of where Gallaher has published). Gallaher is surely as prominent as MANY poets who are listed in Wikipedia.

I fear I haven't found the right way to make these arguments on this site (is "talk" the right place to do this?), and for that I apologize. But I do know what I'm talking about. With Kevin Prufer, I'm editor of Pleiades: A Journal of New Writing, coeditor of New European Poets (Graywolf), translator of I Don't Believe in Ghosts (BOA), by Albanian poet Moikom Zeqo, author of Only the Senses Sleep (New Issues), and author of the forthcoming poetry collection, The Book of Props (Milkweed). I've won five prizes from the Poetry Society of America, as well as two from the Poetry Foundation, and I'm an English/creative writing professor. I think most people in the American poetry world would be comfortable with the idea that Gallaher is an important poet and editor--surely important enough to warrant a Wikipedia entry.

Thank you,

I'm so glad this article is being kept. Wikipedia should pay more due to small press poets - who are notable in more notable ways than many folks wot get Wikipedia articles. Angelicish (talk) 13:06, 22 April 2008 (UTC) angelicish.
