[edit] Discussion
Dispute with 'List of noted polyglots'
Sir John Bowring (1792 –1872, British M.P., according to article claimed to "know" 200 languages and "speak" 100, but in truth knew only 15, with an instrumental knowledge of 35 dialects. 86.134.94.219 18:33, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
Bowring was also a hymn writer, with over 25 hymns published, two of which are still in common usage. He even published two volumes of hymns "Matins and Vespers" (1823), and "Hymns, as a Sequel to the Matins" (1825). See cyberhymnal.org, and their additional citations. 4.255.9.79 05:27, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Human trafficking"
Removed this line: He legalised business that involved human trafficking of Chinese to overseas.[citation needed]
Bowring was elsewhere a champion abolitionist. The only reference to this online I can find is a bombastic religious site.
His article absolutely requires an Asian perspective, as well as a European one, so anything about how he handled himself as Governor of Hong Kong is relevant. But it needs solid citations, especially if it contradicts what seem to be central aspects of his character. -- Yamara 15:32, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
