Johnny (ジョニー Jonī?) is a character in the Guilty Gear fighting game series, making his first appearance in May's ending in the first game, and is first playable in the second game, Guilty Gear X. A swashbuckling iaidōka, he is the captain of the May Ship and leader of the Jellyfish Air Pirates, a group of airship pirates. He is also a womanizer, as evidenced by the fact that the entire crew apart from him consists of (young) women, and that he hits on every single female character he comes into contact with. Johnny is also an avid hockey enthusiast, and possibly player, as illustrated in several of his win poses. It appears that May is infatuated with him. Johnny's last name is revealed in the Guilty Gear X Volume 1 drama CD to be 'Sfondi', as he is called as such by Ky Kiske when engaged.

[edit] Story

[edit] Background

Johnny deeply respected his father, a man that would take care of anyone, even strangers, that came into his house. However, during the war, his father was killed by the Gears, leaving Johnny as an orphan and outcast. Yet, he didn't harbor hatred nor revenge against the Gears. Instead, he created his band of sky pirates, the now Jellyfish Pirates, made up of orphans Johnny raised himself. He would adopt the same caring attitude as his father and welcome anyone in his airship, human, animal or Gear.

[edit] Guilty Gear

Johnny was found by the authorities committing his acts of thievery, even though he stole only from the rich to feed the poor, in a Robin Hood-esque way, and was jailed. The Jellyfish Pirates, while trying to elaborate a plan to free him, heard of a tournament that would grant a wish to the winner. They sent then, the most capable and powerful fighter in the crew, May, to enter the tournament and free Johnny. She secretly wanted Johnny to see her as a woman so that they could be together romantically. Johnny was not a playable character in the first Guilty Gear game, appearing only in May's ending, in which he is mysteriously free, saying that it was because he fought his way out, when in reality, he charmed and tricked the female guard holding his cell into freeing him.

[edit] Guilty Gear X

Johnny spends the entire game hitting on the female characters on his way to rescuing Dizzy from the 500,000 World Dollar bounty on her head. He has two endings: one in which, having been distracted by a fight with May, he comes home to find that Dizzy had been already brought back to the May Ship as a surprise "birthday present". This is probably not canon because it would imply that May met Testament, whom she did not recognize in Guilty Gear XX. In the other, he meets Dizzy directly, and takes her home to the May Ship. This is at least close to canon, as Dizzy is living on the May Ship when Guilty Gear XX begins.

[edit] Guilty Gear XX

After an initial battle in which I-No attacks the May Ship, the story splits. In one path, Johnny runs off to rescue Dizzy; in his first ending, he rescues her and defeats I-No, and then carries Dizzy back to the May Ship because of slightly injured legs. In his second ending, Testament got to I-No first, and is reluctant to let Dizzy continue to live with the Jellyfish Pirates until Johnny defeats him.

The other story path involves other people coming to the May Ship, and ends with a fight against a group of Robo-Kys, and Ky Kiske joins the fight as they wonder what the Post-War Administration Bureau is up to.

[edit] Music references

He appears to be named after Queen member John Deacon in following creator Daisuke Ishiwatari's penchant for naming characters after Queen members. Johnny possesses a unique special move that involves tossing a limited number of coins at an opponent to power up another special attack, this move is listed as "Glitter Is Gold" and is a likely reference to the opening lyrics of the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven".
