John Lyons (UK politician)

John Lyons (born 11 July 1949) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom.

At the 2001 general election, he was elected to the British House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Strathkelvin and Bearsden.

Under the Scottish Parliament (Constituencies) Act 2004, that constituency was abolished for the 2005 general election. Lyons stood in the new East Dunbartonshire, where he lost to the Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson.

As an MP, he accepted accommodation and hospitality from First Group, McDonalds, and the governments of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

His visits to Saudi were to seek justice for British citizens and constituents of his who were wrongly charged with criminal offenses and tortured by the Saudi authorities.

His work as a consultant for FirstGroup began after he was no longer an MP in 2006 to 2007. He was to investigate allegations of anti-union practices by some FirstGroup managers made by the Teamsters union in the US. Lyons' initial investigation reported that some such practices (including leaflets opposing union membership) had taken place. After FirstGroup managers said this would be rectified he conducted a second investigation the next year and his next report found these practices had ended (though allegations by the Teamsters, but no other trade unions, continued to be made)

Before his election to parliament in 2005 he had been a UNISON official.

He consistently voted against and opposed the Iraq war.
