Johann Schnitzler

Johann Schnitzler (April 10, 1835 - May 2, 1893) was an Austrian laryngologist who was a native of Nagy Kanizsa (today part of Hungary). In 1878 he became a professor at the University of Vienna, and afterwards director of the Vienna Poliklinik. He also taught classes on the physiology and pathology of the vocal cords at Conservatory of Music in Vienna. He was the father of famed playwright Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931).
Johann Schnitzler was a founder of modern laryngology in Vienna. He was a pioneer involving inhalation therapy, as well as the use of electrocauteriztion. He was also an early medical practitioner of hypnosis. Schnitzler is credited with coining the term "spastic dysphonia" for a vocal disorder known today as spasmodic dysphonia (SD). His best known written work is Klinischer Atlas der Laryngologie (Clinical Atlas of Laryngology), which was published posthumously in 1895.
