Joel Santana

Joel Natalino Santana, usually known as Joel Santana (born on December 25, 1948, in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil) is a manager and former football player.

One of Santana's greatest achievements in his career as a football manager are his Campeonato Carioca titles. Joel Santana is one of the few managers who succeeded in winning the competition with each one of the four big clubs of the state (Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama). Joel Santana usually plays in a defensive style, and his main objective is preventing his club from suffering goals [1]. In 2004, he successfully helped Vasco da Gama from being relegated to the second division of Campeonato Brasileiro. In 2005, he was hired by Flamengo with the same purpose.

In April 2008, he signed on to coach the South African national football team until the 2010 FIFA World Cup. ^[1]

During his football career as a central defender in the 1970s, he had no caps. In 1980, he retired as a player and became a manager.

He played for the following clubs:

• 1971-1972 - Vasco da Gama (Brazil)
• 1973 - Olaria (Brazil)
• 1974-1975 - Vasco da Gama (Brazil)
• 1976-1980 - América-RN (Brazil)

As a player, he won the following titles:

• Campeonato Brasileiro First Division: 1974 - Vasco da Gama;
• Campeonato Carioca: 1970 - Vasco da Gama;
• Campeonato Potiguar: 1974, 1977, 1979, 1980 - América-RN.

As a manager, Joel Santana coached several clubs. In several seasons he managed clubs from the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirati clubs). In 2006, he began coaching Vegalta Sendai, in the J. League of Japan.

Joel Santana has a very successful career, and won several titles. Most of these titles are state championships. These are the titles won by him:

• Copa Mercosur: 2000 - Vasco da Gama (as manager for the last match);
• Campeonato Brasileiro First Division: 2000 - Vasco da Gama (as manager for the last 3 matches);
• Campeonato Carioca: 1992, 1993 - Vasco da Gama, 1995 - Fluminense, 1996, 2008 - Flamengo, 1997 - Botafogo;
• Campeonato Baiano: 1994, 1999 - Bahia, 2003 - Vitória;
• Supercampeonato Baiano: 2002 - Vitória.
