[edit] Early life

Joe Deane was born in Killeagh, County Cork in 1977. He was educated locally and later attended Midleton CBS where his hurling talents came to the fore. In 1995 he first tasted hurling success when the school won the Harty Cup, a prestigious hurling competition. Deane subsequently studied at University College Cork between 1995 and 1998. He graduated with a BSc in Finance and currently works as relationship manager with regard to property and business banking with ACCBank in Cork. It was during his tenure at university, however, that his hurling skills further developed. He was a member of the UCC panel who won three Fitzgibbon Cup titles in-a-row. Deane also won a Freshers Football All-Ireland title with UCC in 1996.

[edit] Playing career

[edit] Minor & Under-21

Deane's hurling skills brought him to the attentions of the Cork inter-county selectors and he was soon picked for the minor team. He was central to Cork winning the All-Ireland title in 1995, the teams first minor title in a decade. Following this victory Deane soon made the Cork under-21 team. In 1997 he won another All-Ireland medal. In 1998 Deane won a second consecutive All-Ireland medal with the under-21 side. His team-mates on those teams - Donal Óg Cusack, Seán Óg Ó hAilpín and Diarmuid O'Sullivan - would all go on to form the backbone of the senior team over the next decade.

[edit] Senior

Deane made the step up to the Cork senior team in a National League game against Kerry in 1996. He made his championship debut on the same day as Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, however, between his debut and 1999 Deane ended up on the winning side on just one occasion. His only senior success of note was a National Hurling League medal with Cork in May of 1998. In 1999 Cork were back at the top, having won their first Munster Championship title since 1992, with Deane playing a key role at full-forward. Later that year Cork defeated Kilkenny to win their first All-Ireland title since 1990. Deane finished off the year by claiming his first All-Star award.

In 2000 he claimed a second consecutive Munster title, however, Deane's side were defeated by Offaly in the All-Ireland semi-final. While the Cork hurling team should have gone from strength to strength, instead the opposite happened. In 2002 the players went on strike demanding better treatment and conditions. Deane played a huge role as one of the main spokesmen in representing the welfare of his fellow players and the strike was eventually successful in bringing about change. In 2003 Cork were back and Deane won a third Munster medal but suffered defeat by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. In 2004 Cork lost the Munster final, however, they qualified for the All-Ireland final via the "back-door system". Once again their opponents were Kilkenny, however, this time Cork overturned the result of the previous year and Deane captured a second All-Ireland winners medal. Cork were on form again in 2005 with Deane capturing his fourth Munster medal, before going on to defeat Galway in the final to win his third All-Ireland medal. In 2006 Deane was back at his best in the Munster championship. He claimed his fifth provincial title, however, Cork, who were playing in their fourth All-Ireland final in-a-row, were defeated by Kilkenny. As of 2006 'Deano', as he is known to his fans, is the current top scorer on the Cork senior hurling team.

In November 2006 it was revealed that Deane was recovering following an operation for testicular cancer. While rumours about his illness had been circulating in GAA circles for several weeks, Deane refused to confirm the nature of his illness until after the surgery. He returned to playing with Cork in January 2007 in a South-East League game.

Deane was named as Cork senior hurling captain for their game against Waterford on the 29 July 2007 replacing the dropped Kieran Murphy. This is his first time getting this honour.
