Jimmy Johnson (bassist)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jimmy Johnson is a highly-regarded bass player who can be heard with a very diverse range of artists, including James Taylor, Allan Holdsworth, Michael Landau, Rod Stewart and Ray Charles, as well as his own work with Flim & the BB's - "Flim" being an early nickname of Johnson's.
Born into a musical family, his father was a 47 year member of the Minnesota Orchestra's bass section, his mother is a piano teacher and accompianist, and his brother Gordon is also a professional bassist. Raised near Wayzata, Minnesota, he played in prominent local bands D.E.B.B. Johnson (where he met Flim and the BB's keyboardist Billy Barber) and Rise and Shine during the early 70's.
In 1976 Johnson worked with Alembic and GHS to create one of the first 5-string bass guitars with a low B string.
Johnson continues to record and tour with singer-songwriter James Taylor as well as guitarist Allan Holdsworth, and is frequently heard with various groups at The Baked Potato jazz club in Studio City, CA.
