[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

Treacy played his club hurling with his local Bennettsbridge club and enjoyed much success. He won his first senior county title in 1964, before adding three more county medals in 1966, 1967 and 1971.

[edit] Inter-county

Treacy first came to prominence on the Kilkenny senior hurling team in the early 1960s. He was a non-playing sub when ‘the Cats’ won both Leinster and All-Ireland honours in 1963. He won a second Leinster title as a sub in 1964, however, Kilkenny were later beaten by Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. Two years later in 1966 Treacy was firmly installed in the corner-back position as he collected a National Hurling League medal. He later collected his first Leinster title on the field of play and he sunsequently lined out in his first All-Ireland final appearance. While Kilkenny were the red-hot favourites to win, Cork emerged as the victors. In 1967 Treacy was appointed captain of the team. He later won a second provincial medal before leading his men out in Croke Park for the championship decider. On the day Kilkenny defeated Tipperary for the first time since 1922, and Treacy won his first All-Ireland medal on the field of play. Kilkenny lost their provincial crown in 1968, however, the team returned in 1969 with Treacy winning a third Leinster medal. He later won a second All-Ireland medal as Kilkenny accounted for Cork in the championship decider.

Two years later in 1971 ‘the Cat’s were back and Treacy added a fourth Leinster medal to his collection. Unfortunately, Kilkenny were later beaten by old rivals Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. In spite of this loss Treacy’s performance earned him his first All-Star award. The following year he won another provincial title and, once again, Kilkenny faced Cork in the All-Ireland final. In one of the classic games of the modern era Kilkenny came from 8-points down to win the game, giving Treacy a third All-Ireland medal. He was subsequently honoured with a second All-Star award. In 1973 Treacy won a sixth Leinster title, however, Kilkenny were defeated by Limerick in the All-Ireland final. The following year he picked up a seventh provincial medal and, once again, Kilkenny qualified for the All-Ireland final. In a replay of the previous year’s championship decider Kilkenny gained revenge by defeating Limerick giving Treacy his fourth, and final, All-Ireland medal on the field of play. In 1975 he was a non-playing sub as Kilkenny won a fifth consecutive Leinster title and a second consecutive All-Ireland title following a defeat of Galway. Treacy retired from inter-county hurling shortly after.
