[edit] My Five Personal Pillars of Wikipedia

1. Common Courtesy - I can think of no better advice than to adhere to the Golden Rule; particuarly when editing; always treat others the way you would like to be treated, in a way that is friendly, civilized, and shows respect.

2. Moderate Statements - A wise person apportions their belief in accordance with the evidence available. I believe that blanket statements such as 'all scientists accept' or 'the majority of scholars believe' should be avoided unless multiple citations can be obtained to support such an inference. (eg. statistically significant surveys or statements from representative organizations). Consensus can be a rare thing, particularly on the tough questions in life, so in areas where there are gaps in our collective knowledge; I believe that employing moderate, balanced statements is best.

3. Teamwork - No individual knows everything about everything; but the collective sum of human knowlege is enormous. Every individual should have courage to speak up and add his or her two cents worth to the discussion; even if it's a small tidbit of knowledge; every brushstroke helps to paint a better picture. Teamwork is also essential in combating the less desirable aspects of developing an online organism like Wikipedia; vandalism and rogue editors can be countered with the tenacity and persistance of the civilized majority.

4. Accountability - Although it is not an official Wikipedia policy; I encourage all who frequently contribute to do so under their real name; rather than a pseudonymn. One of the great advantages of published media (eg. books, journals, newspapers, etc.) is that the author is inextricably linked with the data, thus helping to identify bias, authority and credibility. I believe Wikipedia would be stronger still if a more rigorous approach to establishing authorship of articles was adhered to. Doubtless this raises challenges regarding identity theft and privacy; but nonetheless; my personal ethos is that I am happy to be associated with everything I have contributed to Wikipedia; I stand by my contributions, which have been made with integrity and to the best of my personal knowledge and ability.

5. The Big Picture - Yes, there are some dodgy articles out there, and there are many improvements that need to be made. But let's not lose sight of what Wikipedia is trying to achieve - a consolidated repository of the sum of all human knowledge; the likes of which has never been attempted before; freely available to all. At the very least; Wikipedia is an excellent starting point; which can be used as a springboard to obtain more in-depth information on just about any subject imaginable. Knowledge is power; and free access to information benefits all. This should always be borne in mind. With such an ambitious goal; Wikipedia should be dynamic, stimulating, and above all, fun!
