Jean-Louis Bruguès, OP (born November 22, 1943) is a French prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, who currently serves as Secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education.

[edit] Biography

Jean-Louis Bruguès was born in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, and studied at the Paris Institute of Political Studies before earning his doctorate in theology. He took his perpetual vows as a memeber of the Order of Friars Preachers, more commonly known as the Dominicans, on October 2, 1972, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1975.

Bruguès served as prior of the Dominican convents of Toulouse and Bordeaux, and later prior of the Province of Toulouse. He was also professor of fundamental moral theology at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse before continuing to teach at the University of Fribourg. He was a member of the International Theological Commission from 1986 to 2002, and in 1995 he was invited by Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger to preach the Lenten conferences at Notre-Dame Cathedral.

On March 20, 2000, Bruguès was appointed Bishop of Angers by Pope John Paul II. He received his episcopal consecration on the following April 30 from Pierre Cardinal Eyt, with Bishops Jean Orchampt and Archbishop François Saint-Macary serving as co-consecrators. He was elected President of the Doctrinal Commission of the French Episcopal Conference in 2002.

Pope Benedict XVI later named him Secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education in the Roman Curia on November 10, 2007, as well as bestowing upon him the personal title of "Archbishop". As Secretary, Bruguès serves as the second-highest official of that dicastery, under Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski.
