James Tully (philosopher)

James Hamilton Tully (born 1946), FRSC, is a Canadian political philosopher. He is known for his scholarship on the political philosophy of John Locke, and also writes on constitutionalism, diversity, indigenous politics, recognition theory, multiculturalism, and the problem of imperialism.

Tully earned a BA from the University of British Columbia and a PhD from Cambridge University. He is a member of the Trudeau Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was special advisor to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.

Tully has held positions at McGill University, the University of Toronto, Cambridge University and Oxford University. Since 2003, he is the Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Law, Indigenous Governance and Philosophy at the University of Victoria.
