James Stephens Bulloch

James Stephens Bulloch (1793 – February 18, 1849) was an early Georgia settler, planter and grandfather of Theodore Roosevelt. Bulloch was the grandson of Georgia governor Archibald Bulloch.^[1]

Born in Savannah, Georgia, Bulloch first married Hester Amarintha Elliott, daughter of Senator John Elliott and his first wife Esther Dunwody (more recently the family changed the name spelling to Dunwoody). They had one son James Dunwoody Bulloch. The close nature of the Georgia planter class is shown in these marriages and business relationships.

After Hester died, Bulloch married Martha Stewart Elliott, the second wife and widow of Senator John Elliott. James and Martha had four children: Anna Bulloch; Martha Bulloch; Charles Irvine Bulloch, who died at age three; and Irvine Stephens Bulloch. Irvine was born in Cobb County after they moved from Savannah.^[2]

Bulloch moved his family in 1839 to north Georgia to partner with Roswell King in establishing a cotton mill. There in what would become Roswell, James, Sr. built Bulloch Hall in 1840 with the labor of slaves. Bulloch cultivated cotton as well until his death in 1849. According to the 1850 Slave Schedules, Martha Bulloch, again a widow, still held 31 enslaved African Americans.^[3] Most of the slaves would have worked as field laborers, but some would have done the work of domestic production to keep the house and plantation running.

Bulloch Hall has been restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
