James Stephen Green (February 28, 1817January 19, 1870) was a United States Representative and Senator from Missouri. Born near Rectortown in Fauquier County, Virginia, he attended the common schools and moved to Alabama and then to Missouri about 1838. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced practice in Monticello, Missouri. He was a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1845 and was elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving from March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1851. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1850, and was Charge d’Affaires to Colombia in 1853-1854. He was appointed Minister Resident in June 1854, but did not present his credentials; he was elected to the Thirty-fifth Congress, but did not take his seat, having been elected to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy in the term commencing March 4, 1855, and served from January 12, 1857, to March 3, 1861. While in the Senate, he was chairman of the Committee on Territories (Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses). His brother, Martin E. Green became a Confederate brigadier general during the American Civil War. James Stephen Green died in St. Louis, Missouri in 1870; interment was in the Old Cemetery, Canton.
