We really need an article here. See [1]. He has been in the news a lot these past few weeks with regards to talk of a "surge" in Iraq. --64.230.123.128 23:52, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

I suggest it should be titled Jack Keane (U.S. soldier), based on the most common form of his name used (including in the link cited above) and Wikipedia's (and most U.S. style guides') preference for the abbreviation for "United States". Suitable redirects can be created. (I note that there are currently 23 pages that link to John Keane (US soldier) and 1 to Jack Keane (U.S. soldier), but the 23 can be fixed. There are none currently to John Keane (U.S. soldier) or Jack Keane (US soldier).) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 05:56, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Here are some arguably reliable sources from which to derive material on Keane and the "Kagan-Keane doctrine":

Note that I haven't reviewed the neutrality of these sources. Some care will probably be needed to extract factual info while avoiding POV. Also note that Gen. A simpler title may be Jack Keane (general). It's not going to change, as general is the highest rank (although there are different types of general, the term general is sufficient.) I can't create the article as I am an IP editor. Here is another source though: [2]. "Jack Keane (general)" may not be sufficiently unique, as there is already a British general who may go by this name as well. (In fact, "Jack Keane (U.S. soldier)" follows the dab method of that other article, John Keane (British soldier).) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 19:37, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I think this article should be moved to simply "Jack Keane". Unfortunately there's already a redirect there, but the move can happen if no one objects. Yaron K. 18:16, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

The issue would be whether any of the John Keanes listed in in the article pointed to by the redirect might be well-known as "Jack Keane", or if there is any other well-known "Jack Keane". A quick check of the current Johns shows none with a cited nickname of "Jack", suggesting that they aren't famous for the name, whether or not people called them "Jack". I'd support this move if we can't find any other very prominent Jacks. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 19:39, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Keane involvement in AEI paper

This article currently says:

Keane and scholar Frederick W. Kagan released a policy paper, entitled "Choosing Victory: A Plan for Success in Iraq"…

I had originally thought this was the case as well, especially after seeing articles mentioning the "Kagan-Keane plan" or "Kagan-Keane doctrine". However, when I read these articles and others that mention both Keane and Kagan, I did not find any specific statement that Keane actually participated in the paper. The AEI paper, in fact, does not include Keane's name. It looks to me like the press may have combined the names because the two men's ideas are very similar, but if we don't have a source that actually backs up the above assertion, it should be removed. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 15:17, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

This is puzzling, but there certainly are sources that say Keane was a co-author; here's one, for example. Maybe there's some semantic issue here, like he co-authored "the plan" but not the actual words. Yaron K. 04:20, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
