J-1 visa

A J-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by the United States for exchange visitors. The purpose of this visa is to promote cultural exchange. Students must meet certain eligibility criteria and be sponsored by a private sector or government program. Exchange visitors are expected to leave the United States at the completion of their program and return to their home country. [1]
[edit] Taxation for J1 and J2 Visa holders
The Taxation of J1 and J2 visa holders, vary depending on the category under which the visa was issued Students, Research, Physician, etc. J1 students get US Tax Treaty benefits and exemption from Social Security and Medicare taxes for up to five years, while for J1 researchers it is up to two years.
Depending on your residency status, you have to file 1040 or 1040NR tax forms.
