[edit] Administration

Itahar is an intermediate panchayat in Uttar Dinajpur district, with Chhayghara, Durgapur, Durlovpur, Gulandar, Joyhat, Kapasia, Marnai, Patirajpur and Surun village panchayats under it.[5]

[edit] Transport

The Gazole-Itahar rail track, off the recently constructed Eklakhi-Balurghat line, is phase 1 of the Gazole-Raiganj rail link.[6][7] The Balurghat-Eklakhi railway line was taken up in 1983-84. [8]

A bridge on the Mahananda connecting Itahar in Uttar Dinajpur with Chanchal in Malda district has been under construction since 1999. The main portion of the bridge was built in 2004 but subsequent work has remained suspended.[9]

[edit] Politics

In the 2006, 2001 and 1996 elections to the state assembly, Srikumar Mukherjee of CPI won the Itahar seat, defeating Zainal Abedin of INC / NCP. In 1991, Zainal Abedin defeated Swadesh Chaki of CPI. In 1987, Swadesh Chaki of CPI defeated Zainal Abedin of INC. Zainal Abedin of ICS/ INC defeated Basanta Lal Chatterjee of CPI in 1982 and Salil Kumar Guha of CPI(M) in 1977.[10]

Itahar is part of Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency).[11]

[edit] Health

With the 2008 bird flu outbreak in West Bengal,[12] 16,000 birds were destroyed in Gualadar and Surun gram panchayats under Itahar police station, but some villagers refused to kill their birds and health workers had to retreat from such villages.[13]
