Ion Moina Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of U Cluj. The stadium holds 28,000 people and was built in 1961.
The first football and athletics stadium in Cluj-Napoca was built between 1908 and 1911; it had woooden stands and had a capacity of 1,500. The official inauguration in 1911 was done by organizing a game between a Cluj-Napoca team and Galatasaray Istanbul. It was the first game in Europe for Galatasaray, and the Cluj team won 8-1.
In 1961 new stands were built and the capacity of the stadium became 28,000 on wooden benches, while the old stands were moved to Câmpia Turzii. The 1961 stands have an U-shaped appearance, as the name of the team that uses it. The name represents the fastest sprinter in Europe in 1948.
Today, the stadium is in such a state that it barely geot the match hosting license for Liga I games after most of the seating sections were fenced off and 7.000 seats were added. There have been talks for replacing the old Ion Moina for long, however, the stadium remains an object of electoral dispute and also a financial asset: the land on which it lies values a lot on the market.
U Cluj fans cherish the much loved stadium and would not at all agree with the great stadium in another place than that it lies on.
