Intercolegial de Baile

Intercolegial de Baile is a popular dance competition held every year in several cities of Mexico. The competition was born in 1987 in Mexico City. It's divided in two rounds: Region and National, it's also divided in 3 categories: Kids, Junior and Senior.

The first round starts in 7 regions of Mexico:

1. Centro: Host- Mexico City.
2. El Bajio: Host- León (1987-2006),in 2007- Querétaro.
3. La Fuerza del Noreste: Host- Monterrey.
4. Al Ritmo del Noroeste: Host- Chihuahua (1987-2004), Ciudad Juarez (2005- present).
5. Occidente: Host- Guadalajara.
6. Oriente Sur: Host- Puebla (1987-2005),Xalapa (2006-present).
7. Reto Peninsula: Host- Merida (1987-2006), in 2007- Cancún

From this round, the Top 15 groups (from each category) of the competition (Top 10 in 2006), pass to the next round.

The 15 best groups of the country compete in the grand finale in Mexico City, (as of 2006, national competitions are held in different cities). From here on, the competition gets bigger and bigger, until the final day. At the end of the Competition, they give Special Awards that are:

1. Best Idea
2. Friendship
3. Best Costume
4. Ayuda a Ayudar
5. Best Crowd

The Top 5 places are named, with the first place winning the competition and $1,000 dollars in cash.

In 2006, Intercolegial de Baile broke records:

1. 180 groups competed.
2. 3,000 contestants from 36 cities of Mexico.
3. 22,000 people on the event
4. First time 10 groups of each category competed on the Grand Finale.
5. First time the Finale was not held in Mexico City.
6. In 2006, Xalapa became a host of Intercolegial de Baile.
7. The national competition was held in Acapulco.

2007 also had records and firsts:

1. Querétaro became a host of Intercolegial de Baile.
2. First time a National Competition of Kids Category.
3. 2,800 contestants from 31 cities of Mexico
4. Cancún became a host for Intercolegial de Baile.
5. The national competition was held in Veracruz.
