[edit] History

Insel Air is a private initiative of various businesses and financial institutions who recognized the need and importance for a Curaçao based and owned airline to provide reliable quality sevice to regional destinations for a reasonable price. The airline started operations in 2006 with one Embraer 110-P1 Bandeirante flying from Curaçao. The first flight was to the neighboring island of Aruba. Soon after the daily scheduled flights to Aruba, Insel Air started with flights to the other neighboring island of Bonaire. On December 9, 2006, Insel Air announced the successful legal and financial closure of the Regional Airlift for the Island of Curaçao. This regional airlift will be served with a MD-83. After obtaining rights for a Curaçao-St. Maarten route, the airline still did not obtain their MD-83, thus they had leased the SLM MD-82 for their St. Maarten flight, until their MD-83 arrived at Curaçao.

Insel Air uses Travel Technology Interactive's airline management system, Aeropack.

[edit] Incidents & accidents

In July 2007, Insel Air's MD83, registration PJ-MDA, was struck by one of the ground handeling trucks at the airport of St. Maarten. On the same day, a DAE Fokker 100 had broken down at Curaçao and DAE had asked Insel Air if it could take their passengers for them to Curaçao, but it turned out that the DAE Fokker 100 had to take all the passengers, including the Insel Air passengers themselves since the Insel Air MD83 had to fly without its passengers back to Curaçao. The MD83 was fixed and is still flying with Insel Air.
