[edit] some context for the maps
A while ago, I created the following map for showing where Donabate is: (see first map on the right)
Later, someone replaced this by a more standard "Infobox", and instead of drawing a red dot by hand like I did, used the nice "pin coords" trick, which is great: (see second map on the right, below)

The only problem with the new infobox is the lack of context for this map. When someone sees this map, he has no idea what is shown. What is this island? (hopefully everyone will figure out it's Ireland ;-)) What is the green area? What is the light green area? I think none of these are self-explanatory, even if educated people (or Dubliners) could make a good guess. I think the infobox needs some sort of "description" parameter, which allows adding a description of what the map shows. Nyh 12:03, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] pin coords
It looks to me as if the pin coords (used for Galway and Lisburn above) produce different results with different skins.--Henrygb 10:11, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for bring it up, i was not aware of the problem, but i have an idea of what the cause and soultion is,. The problem is less with the pinn cord coding, at least that i can see, and more with CSS as it seems that the different skins render the width of the box differently, which has a major effect on where the pin cord is displayed. I'll put in a fix and try to see what happens. Also the ones on this page at the moment do not display correclty in default skin, due to the fact that i changed the width of the box over the weekend, and havnt changed the display on here. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 04:24, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- The problem with the skins should now be fixed, tested and works on all versions under the preferences. I am guessing it was a css issue, apparently the various skins interpret the "em" measurement differently though for "px" the result was the same. Their is though 2 issues that are still current, both have to do with rendering in a mozilla typer browser vs IE. Their is a "thicker" border on mozilla then their is on IE, this is a css/IE issue that is out of my control. The other problem is that the locater dot will on some, though currently for this template is used for this would only effect Northern Ireland Maps, maps will be located about 2px below what it would be on mozilla, apparently this is not an isolated issue, as i have seen the same effect happen on other templates using a similar system. - Fixed the marker location bug, tested in FF 1.5.0.1, IE6 SP2, and OP 7.11. IE is so ridiculous sometimes. Apparently there is a bug in IE where it uses the font-size property to set the height of very small DIVs [1]. The reason that the marker was off was because it was forcing the marker's containing DIV to be 20px or so, and then vertically centering the marker in that. The marker is still 1px furthur to the right in IE and OP than it is in FF, but it's hardly noticeable. I'm not sure quite why that is; it might be due to misinterpretation of the box model. ~MDD4696 23:41, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Any plans to add a section for county colours like the Asturian wikipedia? theKeith

- Yeah i notcied that, some one else uses it as well. My issues with it is how offical are those flags, and the colours. I have allways had the imoression that they are more tradational then anything. I'll do some research and put out some feelers and see what i can coume up with. - The following is interesting Ireland: county colours, it basically says they are unofficial and often not supported outside the nationalist community - so would this be an issue? See also Flags of Ireland - counties.

- Intresting, i allwas out the colours as having more towrds the county teams, i.e.GAA, then offical ststus in the county then. As for it being an issue, i could see it as such espically withthe counties in the north, considering that the colours would have no official status withthe exception of the county GAA bords. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:19, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Adding infobox to town articles - Can you help with town crests or mottos?
I'm seeing many town articles don't have an infobox even in the top 100, so I am going through them to update to the new infobox or adding one as appropriate and am up to #30.
However, I notice that few towns have either crests or mottos. Does anyone know where to find them and would like to help? I have enough to do with finding the longitude and latitude and grid references as well as elevations but seem to be able to confirm those except it requires time to get them right. I presume there is no easy way to make these additions except manually. ww2censor 20:25, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah i was planning on filling in the gaps but I put it on hiatus due to an issue of pouplation information in these artciles and how it would be diplayed in the infobox. As for crest and mottos i would say the best place to statrt is on on the town website, if they have one, or somethimes you might find it on the county site, but i would not expect to come across them frequenly, As for the longitude and latitude, i would use http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/vocabularies/tgn/ , so far i have had a good experince with the website over things like multimap, which has a tendency of not getting the cords right, I don't know what to tell you about elevations, for grid references I use the UK OSI site, but the irish grid refrenc is supposed to change eventually (key word eventually). Umm yeah so far it's all manually, if you could automate it it would be grand but becides figuring out all of the infoi that you need to get for each article you also need to decide on pin pos as it differs for each article. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 23:15, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

- I am always leary about the heardilic sites though, tha accuracy of the inamges is always in question, though the second site looks like a good call. I have come across several seals that are on the town sites, mostily in Kildare, that have not ben uploaded, but i did not upload then do to eh fact of the size of the image would not mak it worthwhile to have displayed on the page. Anyway i dont think we should hold back about adding the boxes if their is no seal, just having the map on the page via the infobox adds to the article. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 04:29, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

- I've created a newer map to fit this purpose (found here). I think it is more suitable for the infobox than either of the above. It may, however, require subdivision lines (for either countys or districts) to be added. Jhamez84 13:00, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Just for sake of comparison with the above, this is what Jhamez84's map looks like at the sort of size it would appear in an infobox:
I like the fact that this map obviates the impression – given very markedly in the Infobox_UK_place map – that NI is an island. At this scale, though, I think it would be improved by the omission of the grey urban areas and the motorways: the aim of the map in this infobox, in my view, is to show the position of the particular town in question within its district and within NI as a whole – a strong point of the Infobox_Irish_Place map – so that I think that this proposal would indeed be improved by inclusion of the district boundaries. -- Picapica
- Thank you for the contact. As someone not from the region, I was unsure as to whether to use the Counties of Northern Ireland, or the Districts of Northern Ireland as divisions of land for purposes of a geographic reference frame.
- I'd be more than happy to add district boundaries. I'm keen on keeping urban areas and motorways for two reasons (if I may attempt to persuade you otherwise...); they are often helpful and alternative reference frames for readers, and consistency with the rest of the UK's local maps. [edit] Single coordinate field
The two coordinate fields should be replaced with a single field called "coordinates". The value would of this field would be a coordinate template (e.g. {{coor title dms}} or {{coord|...|display=inline,title}} in the future). See {{Infobox CityIT}} for an example where this is done. When this is done articles which use this template and also contain a coordinate template should have the coordinate template moved into the article.
