The colours used for capital and metros are too far apart. Since metros can be considered to be a subset of capital cities, I suggest that the header colour be moved to one as close as possible to the capital colour.
Request new fields for the metro infobox:
1. City-area
2. City-population
3. City-density
4. Metro-area
5. Metro-population
6. Metro-density

[edit] I am still a little confused

Hi Ganesh,

Can we please improve the naming of these templates to make it more intuitive. What I mean is, we should just have templates called

{{IndiaStateInfobox}}
{{IndiaDistrictInfobox}}
{{IndiaTalukInfobox}}
{{IndiaCityInfobox}}
{{IndiaTownInfobox}}
{{IndiaVillageInfobox}} -->this one may not be needed.

Also, I believe in the District and Taluk infoboxes, we should have the concerned state map with the district or taluk marked on it instead of the India map. Or maybe we can have a small India map and the state map blown up from it(Hope you get the idea).

As of now, India jurisdiction infobox, is not named very intuitively. I tried working on these infoboxes today.... I was trying to move some fields from that KAR infobox into this but looks like you've already redirected it here. I dont know if I am missing something. Sarvagnya 16:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

There is no need for a seperate templates like you have listed above. All of them are handled with a single box with a parameter called "type". State infobox alone is seperate, use {{India state infobox}}. Having a single template really helps with maintenance. Features can be added to the box that can affect all types of articles.
The reason the locator map is used is consistency across Indian geographical articles. Also for the reader, it first identifies where the subject is located with respect to India. Please think about global audience here (not Indians alone). District maps like you refer to can be added in a section of the article, "Administration" would be the best fit.
The name of the box does not matter. It is not visible to the reader, it is just a vehicle to produce a box of meaningful information.
All the fields in the KAR has been moved here. If you still have doubts, you can copy to the source of the KAR box (pull it from history) into your sandbox and test it.

[edit] Locator dot is invisible

What is the purpose of the paramter "taluk_names"? If it is for the name of the taluk, i suppose it should be "taluk_name". Also the displayed name should be "Taluk". A better name would be "sub district". Sub distrct names like Taluk, Tehsil etc differ from state to state. Please see Nomenclature and Number of Sub-Districts in States/UTs.
How to use the "type" field? I filled in "village" as a type in this page, but it doesn't seem to have any impact. --(Sumanth|Talk) 08:34, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] class change "infobox geography vcard" comparison

A class change was recently reverted from "infobox geography" back to "infobox". "Infobox geography" is the standard class for infoboxes of this nature. I reverted the class change because it caused the box to take up extra space. For people (like me) who mostly write articles, every centimeter of vertical space counts, since infoboxes often shove images, timelines, and charts far down past the text that they were meant to be displayed next to. If its absolutely necessary, we can do a straw poll or find a way to make the change without bulking up the template (and adding excess cell borders that make it look like a rib cage or earthworm--we want to group data into logical blocks). But, IMO, {{Infobox Australian Place}} has the cleanest design and features (notwithstanding the width/height padding that they chose), and I'd prefer that this template resembles it.
Also, I've heard that small single-use meta-templates like {{pop density km2 to mi2}} should be hard-coded, since they tend to increase article load times. Please advise if I am wrong, though. Thanks. Saravask 23:40, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

The first part to your reply: I was just putting it out there; use it, don't use it. I just wanted other people to see the difference. The class "Infobox geography" verses class "infobox" either way, in my opinion, it is a fine looking infobox. The second part: I haven't heard that and I know plenty of articles and infoboxes that use small templates like that. They make the code a little simplier. And yes, I do agree that the folks that worked on the Infobox Australian Place did a fine job. It is one of the better ones. —MJCdetroit 01:33, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

The failed WP:AUM proposal has more details on my second point. Honestly, For example, this template once used {{convert}} for all conversions. I noticed that, once I hard-coded for complex templates like {{convert}}, load times improved dramatically (they were cut in half, or by several seconds). Also, I noticed that the conversion template was frequently tinkered with, often causing the template syntax to break and fail. It might have to do with the number of if/else blocks, though, since I noticed no difference when simple templates like {{AutoLink}} were hard-coded. Saravask 13:36, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

I guess the one downfall of {{convert}} is that it is an all-in-one template, as opposed to a single use meta-template. Meaning that it is capable of converting a lot different things. If someone tinkers with that template it could affect everything and not just the area of the template that was changed. I did a test (although not very scientific) trying to compare the load times of the Mumbai article in two different sandboxes when using an infobox that is hard coded and one that uses meta templates. After saving the articles, the meta-templated infoboxed article was always a little faster loading than the hardcoded one. Although the time difference was nothing to get exicited about either way. The past problems you had were probably something that was inherent to Template:convert more than anything else. :) —MJCdetroit 16:16, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Sounds good. BTW, I noticed that when the convert templates were used, the altitude figure stopped displaying whenever the area_total input is missing (for example, compare Itanagar with Srinagar). Do you know how to return it to the previous behavior? Thanks. Saravask 17:01, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

The only other things I could think of would be to add a optional parameter for "other name" and maybe change the field name "altitude" to elevation. Other name could be helpful for instances where the common name or the name from the British Empire days has changed, e.g. Bombay. Altitude is how high an airplane is and elevation is how high a settlement is. Of course, both of these I would consider minor. —MJCdetroit 01:09, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

"other_name" would be useful; it could also be used to display the place's name in native script, though that has been discouraged in the past. I see that displaying ultiple names is common for other countries' cities (see Harbin or Sapporo). Other people can comment. But altitude is a legacy param used in thousands of articles; it would require bot work to fix. The field's caption is now "Elevation". Saravask 22:24, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

I want to create a mini-version of this template, to be used for translating into other wikis, with the sole parameters of name, locator map and coordinates. How should I proceded, without having to copy entire template and subpages? --Soman 08:51, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

The code is modular, so you can delete blocks of it without wrecking the template. Just delete everything below the ###### Coordinates ###### section and above the final |}. I've tried adding hCard markup (classes "vcard" "fn org" and "nickname"), but the "fn org" doesn't seem to be appearing in the output (its span should wrap the place name). Can anyone fix that, please? I've also changed the template to use a more specific category, Category:Articles on India needing coordinates from May 2007 (et seq) Andy Mabbett 07:30, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

That problem doesn't seem to be due to Andy Mabbett's edits. The problem still persist. For eg., see Mussoorie. All the maps seem to link to Google. Why do we link to a commercial site like google maps when Wikipedia is all about non-propriety software?--Seraphiel 05:52, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

There's no intent to endorse or unfairly prefer Google. The straight link was PlaneMad's suggestion. Initially, I wasn't sure of the need, since we already had {{coord}}. But it has turned out to be a handy feature that is useful in checking and calibrating coordinates, browsing landforms, and looking at maps--all accessable in just one click. Also, direct linking allows us to customize the zoom level for different types of jurisdictions (e.g., lower zoom for states, higher for large cities, much higher for small towns, etc.) I also compared all the map services and found that Google (as of now) has the best street map coverage and satellite imagery resolution of India. For example, look at how India's states and territories are labelled while China's are not. In Google Maps, all the big Indian cities also have better and more detailed street maps than the other options. There'd be no problem in switching to WikiMapia or some other service if/when their coverage of India trumps Google's. Hope this helps. Saravask 23:40, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I wish I could tell you. There are about 6,500 new links to Division that appeared this past week on Special:Whatlinkshere/Division; however, I can't see that any relevant changes were made to the template during that period nor can I find the offending link in the source myself! --Russ (talk)

Well, maybe I can find it. ;) This edit to the Sandbox version of the template appears to fix the Division link issue without introducing any new problems that I can see. As a technical note, the use of {{{division}}} instead of {{{division|}}} should not change anything because the entire line is inside a {{#if:{{{division|}}} block; therefore, we can assume that {{{division}}} is defined within the block, and there is no need for the pipe that only is used if the parameter is undefined. --Russ (talk) 15:39, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

OK, I see the problem. It's the confusing template expansion semantics. Look at the code in User:CBM/Sandbox, which also links to division (see the bottom of [2]). Notice there is no link at all in the page body (the HTML source shows the page body is completely empty), but nevertheless whatlinkshere shows a link, because text inside false conditionals is still processed. Getting rid of the pipes should do the trick, since [[{{{division}}} division]] is not a valid page name. — Carl (CBM · talk) 16:28, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

I am seeing a lot of html code in the info boxes on Indian cities in Firefox, eg "colspan="2" style="color:black; line-height:1.15em; background-color: #D3DAED; font-size:1.30em; text-align:center;" I don't know what to do about it. Could someone with a technical aptitude sort it out as it is making it difficult to read infoboxes of Indian city articles in Firefox.--▓▒░الأهواز ★ Al-Ahwaz░▒▓ 00:55, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Is there only a seal parameter and nothing else? We should have flag, seal and arms, so all three can be displayed. I’ve added a flag for Rajpipla just now but cannot then add the arms. Bossk-Office 15:21, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Can you fill out the new fields I've added? They need to be the *official* and *current* arms/seal, not historical ones that no longer are used by the government. [edit] Categorization bug

If this template is used with state_name=Delhi, the article is placed in Category:Cities and towns in Delhi. That category, however, has been redirected to Category:Cities and towns in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Can the template be fixed to recategorize those articles? --Russ (talk) 16:23, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

I have implemented a "dirty fix", but in my opinion, all this categorization should be moved out of the infobox and into the articles for exactly this reason. This template is doing way too much. --TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:47, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Two expression errors

Could a knowlegable maintainer please investigate the infobox in Omalur - there are expression errors in the elevation and population density, but the usage appears consistant with the documentation on the infobox page. Thanks, 71.198.255.227 (talk) 02:17, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

In English Wikipedia, the decimal separator is the period "." (dot, full stop) and not the comma ",". In the page showed, the entered number was 8,16, but it should have read 8.16. The comma messes up the math expression. This is why numbers need to be entered in a RAW unformatted fashion, i.e. no commas (1126.75 not 1,126.75), no units (8.16 and not 8.16 km²). —MJCdetroit ^(yak) 03:31, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Cities and towns in (State)" categories

Per recent CFD discussion, it's been noted that there were six Indian cities which had coding errors in this template, with the result that instead of getting funnelled into the appropriate "Cities and towns in (State)" category, they were sitting in a malformed category called just Category:Cities and towns in. For a sample of the kinds of errors that caused this, two of them had the state_name field left blank, one had no state_name field at all but was using just state instead, and on the other three the field directly above state name hadn't been closed with a | .

You really shouldn't be using an infobox template to create or apply categories for you, as this often results in unforeseen consequences like this, or inappropriate pages ending up in the categories because people use the template for unintended purposes such as decorating their userpages, etc.

So I'd ask that you guys do one of two things:

take the category-creating code off this template, and apply the appropriate "Cities and towns in (State)" category directly to each individual city or town article instead,
if, for some reason, you really, really don't want to do that, then at least monitor Category:Cities and towns in (which will be a redlink, but can still be clicked on to see if anything's showing up in the category) on a regular basis, and fix the infobox on any article that shows up in there.

Further to the previous comments, see what happen when the state name is linked here? Also take a look at the category listing at the bottom of Puducherry. I realise that the automatic creating of categories is probably a good idea but with no documentation it is not obvious that the category will be created nor that it may cause problems.
