[edit] Background

Indonesian Idol won the 2005 and 2006 Panasonic Awards for the Best Music Variety Show. It also defeated its rival, Akademi Fantasi Indosiar or Indonesians usually say AFI. Singapore Tourism Board also rewarded Indonesian Idol Season 1 by inviting the Top 11 contestants of Indonesian Idol Season 1 to the American Idol World Tour there. Joy, the winner of season 1, was the opening singer of the concert.

[edit] Overview

[edit] Early Auditions

The show is hosted by Amelia Natasha aka Ata and Irgi Ahmad Fahrezi aka Irgi. Later, Irgi was replaced by Daniel Mananta due to his popularity in MTV. On the show, hopeful contestants are screened by preliminary panels to be selected for singing talent or humorous potential and human interest. Those who pass the preliminaries are potentially aired on the show. There were 32,000 people who auditioned the first season of Indonesian Idol. 37,000 people in the second season. 48,000 people in the third season. and 90,000 people in the fourth season. Contestants must be Indonesian citizens and, for the first season, had to be 18 to 24 years old. For the Second and Third season, the contestants had to be 16 to 28. As a result there were many teenagers and High School Students that made it to the Final 12 such as Monita and Vira from second season and also Tesa, Brinet, Christy, Gea,and Dirly from third season. Though Karen from first season were voted to be the finalist before the rule used.

Auditioning contestants must bring with them to auditions a valid proof of age (and citizenship) such as a birth certificate and a driver's license or a birth certificate and a passport, along with the registration form from the official website or from magazines and newspaper. Those who are ineligible are: those who have current talent representation or a recording contract(but may have had one at some point in the past); have made it to a top 11 on Season 1, top 12 on Season 2 and 3. Contestants that made it to the top 30 on Season 1, top 24 on Season 2, and top 28 on Season 3 may participate at the next seasons. As a result many contestants from the Season 1 participated on Season 2 and 3. For example, Yara from the second Season's top 24 made it to the top 28 at the third Season.

Place audition cities have included; Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Medan, Makasar, and Surabaya. On Season 3, small auditions took place at Manado and Ambon. The contestants from Manado and Ambon that made to the second round of audition were brought to Surabaya for the second round of audition. There were 2 Rounds of Auditions. The auditions usually take place in large convention hall where thousands of people wait in line for audition. The first round judges were the Sony BMG people. If the contestants are illegible, they would go to the next round of audition and face the Main Judges. The main Judges are Indra Lesmana (Indonesia's Jazz Star), Titi DJ (Indonesia's Pop Diva), Meuthia Kasim (1st and 2nd season, Indonesia's famous Radio Announcer), Indy Barends (3rd Season, Indonesia's Best Television Host), and Dimas Djayadiningrat (Indonesia's Music Video Director). Contestants are required to sing a cappella. Poor singers often face intense and humbling criticism from the judges. Typically the judges express disgust or dismay or suppressed laughter. Those who impress the majority of the judges, move on to the Elimination Round which take place in Jakarta. Usually only 150 to 170 contestants who got through to the elimination round in Jakarta.

[edit] On to Jakarta

There are 3 Elimination Rounds. In the first elimination round, 170 contestants from around Indonesia were separated in 17 groups of 10 contestants. In the 2nd elimination round, male and female contestants were paired and sang duet. In the last elimination round the remaining contestants sang his/her choice of song alone, in front of the judges. Finally, twenty eight contestants were then chosen for the workshop stage. At previous Seasons, thirty contestants were chosen to the Workshop Stage on the first Season, and twenty four contestants on the second Season. On the first season, 30 contestants were separated in groups of 10.And every week, 3 contestants from each group were chosen to the Top 10 or we may say The Spectacular Show. Television audiences could vote their favorites by SMS and Premium Calls. After 9 contestants were chosen, there were wild card round.10 contestants who were unlucky at the workshop were brought back at the Wild Card round. Only 1 contestant from the Wild Card round that will join the 9 contestants at the Spectacular Show and picked by the judges. However, the judges picked Karen Theresia Pooroe. However, the judges picked another contestant which was Lucky Octavian. At the second season, there were no Wild Card round. 24 contestants were separates in groups of 8. Every week, 4 contestants were picked to move on to the Top 12. At the third season, The workshop stage comprised of three rounds each for male and female contestants. There were 28 contestants that made it to the Workshop stage on the third season. In the first week, eight contestants (four males and four females) were sent home. Six contestants (three males and three females) were sent home in the second week, and the final workshop eliminated four more contestants (two males and two females). Before the spectacular round, pre-gala and wild card show was held. Four of the eliminated contestants were chosen by the judges and two of them, one male and one female, were given a place in the Spectacular Show based on voting result.

[edit] Spectacular Show

The Spectacular Show, which lasts eleven weeks, each finalist performs a song live (two in the top 4 and top 3 and three in the finale) in prime time with a weekly theme at Balai Sarbini Concert Hall in Jakarta in front of live audiences. Unlike American Idol, Indonesian Idol's Result Show is conducted about 1 hour after the Spectacular Show. For the Grand Final, the Result Show is conducted 7 days after the Grand Final. In the Result Show, some finalists who get the fewest votes are put in the bottom three or bottom two. Each week, finalist with the fewest votes is sent home. This process is repeated each week until the one remaining contestant is declared the winner.

Indonesian Idol's famous sentence for the result is Indonesia Memilih! (Indonesia has chosen!) along with a 1 minute pause and at last, the result. For the Grand Final, the show is usually conducted at the Plenary Hall of Jakarta Convention Center/Istora Senayan Jakarta, where the two remaining finalists perform in front of approximately 7,000 audiences. Every season, the two remaining finalists in the Grand Final sing a new single for the Winner's Record. The song is going to be recorded at the winner's album. The First Season's Winner Song is Karena Cinta (Because of Love), The Second Season's Winner Song is Semua Untuk Cinta (All For Love), The Third Season's winning song is Kemenangan Hati (Winning of Heart), and the Fourth Season's Winner Song is Aku Tetap Milikmu (I'm Still Yours).

[edit] Season 3

The third season of Indonesian Idol was launched on April 21, 2006. The auditions were held at some Indonesia's major cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Medan. This season, Indonesian Idols also conducted small auditions at some other cities such as Manado and Ambon. The contestants who passed the initial round in both Manado and Ambon were eventually brought into an elimination round in Surabaya. After an additional elimination round, the final group of contestants were finally brought to Jakarta to determine the final twelve contestants who made it onto the Indonesian Idols Spectacular Show.

As with previous Indonesian Idol seasons, the spectacular show was held in Balai Sarbini (Sarbini Building) located in South of Jakarta. The Third Season's finalists were considered better than the previous seasons by the judges. However, there were some surprising eliminations going on at the Spectacular Show. Depe, who was a huge favorite to be at the Grand Final, was unfortunately landed on the bottom three along with Gea and Nobo after the first Spectacular Show. She was eventually the first Idol to be eliminated by fans votes. Indra Lesmana said that Depe was way too early to be eliminated. After this elimination, Gea and Nobo were always safe until they were eventually voted out. The other unexpected elimination was Sisi's, who was a huge favorite amongst judges to be the Season 3 winner. She got eliminated on the fifth Spectacular Show. The Final Three consisted of Gea, Dirly, and Ihsan. There were unconfirmed rumors arised saying that the Top 3 contestants made it to the top because of their looks.

The third season also released a compilation album called, Tribute to Tonny Koeswoyo. Tonny, one of the founding members of Koes Plus, a legendary Indonesian Rock Band, died in 1987. Before his death, he and his brothers produced more than a few catch tunes that people still remember until today. The Top 12 Finalists sang Nusantara (Nusantara is the other name for Indonesia) as well as Koes Plus' other famous hit songs such as Diana and Kembali ke Jakarta (Return to Jakarta).

Gea the Top 3 finalist was a favorite to be the winner of the season because of her energetic and "cutesy" performance. However, her fans votes were not enough to safe her from elimination from the Top 3. This left Dirly and Ihsan to battle at the Grand Finale for the Indonesian Idol Season 3 title. As with the previous Indonesian Idols seasons, the Grand Finale was held at the Istora Senayan (Senayan Athletic Complex) in Central Jakarta. The live audience who attended the Grand Finale was approximately 7,000 persons. The winner's single for the 3rd Season is Kemenangan Hati. It was written by Indonesia's top composer, Yovie Widyanto, who also served as guest judge at the Indonesian Idols season two auditions. When the dust was settled, Ihsan was announced by Ata, the host, as the winner of Indonesian Idols Season 3. Ihsan then performed an encore performance to close the season.

Since the show ended, Dirly and Gea have been seen debuted their acting career in a TV drama called Idola (Idol) which was aired on RCTI every Mondays on 8 pm.

Ihsan also debuted his acting career in an Islamic religious series called Maha Kasih which is also aired by RCTI.

This season also implemented new rules for the final portion of the contest. Instead of competing in semifinal heats in which the top vote-getters are promoted to the final round, 28 semifinalists were divided into 2 groups, -- 14 men and 14 women. Four contestants of each group got voted off in the first week, three in second week and two in the third week until resulting the top 10 contestants who filled 10 of 12 spots on the Spectacular Shows. Out of all the eliminated semifinalists the judges nominated two from each group for a wildcard ticket each to be in the Spectacular Show. The tickets were finally taken by Brinet and Tesa.

[edit] Season 4

On Wednesday, January 10, 2007, Fremantle Media Asia officially launched the fourth edition of award winning Indonesian Idols. The show was initially announced at the 2006 Panasonic Awards when the Indonesian Idols judges were on hand to received the award for the Best Music and Variety Show. The 4th season commercial also has been airing in RCTI prior to the official launch date. In the official Indonesian Idols website, it was stated that starting from Season 4, future Idols participants can register online and print the audition form rather than using the current registration process which might take up to a whole day to complete. The organizers have added more pre-audition cities compared to last season which received additional host towns such as Banjarmasin, Makassar, Manado, Palembang, Manokwari, Denpasar & Semarang. So far, more than 120,000 people have taken advantage of the new registration process and registered online.Ata and Daniel are back as fourth season's colorful hosts. On the workshop round plus the first two spectacular ahow, Daniel hosted the show alone due to Ata's pregnancy. Ata started joining Daniel back hosting the show on the third spectacular show. Nirina Zubir and Indra Bekti was also announced as the Idol Banget (Extreme Idols) hosts.

However, changes were made to the judging team this season. While Titi DJ and Indra Lesmana are back as the judges, due to scheduling difficulties of their career, Indy Barends and Dimas Djayadiningrat have resigned from judging fourth season Indonesian Idols. Their colorful judging and commentary will be missed. They both are going to be replaced by Anang and Jamie Aditya. Anang, who is the husband of Indonesia's most famous Pop Diva, Krisdayanti, is also known as an established musician as well as a music producer. He was very well known for writing, singing and co-producing Multi-Platinum albums alongside his wife in the duo "Anang dan Krisdayanti". Jamie Aditya, was a Video Jockey during MTV Asia early years. Jamie, a talented musician in his own right, is rumored to launch an LP in 2007 which he hopes to be as successful as Indonesian singer Anggun

The fourth season premiered on 30 March 2007.

The fourth season's theme this year is a compilation album called, "Masterpiece". This album was released on the top 6 night (Friday, 22 June 2007). It s published that all top 12 contestants sing the song "Bendera" (originally sung by Cokelat) and they already made the video clip. The short clip of it was shown on the top 7 Result Show. On the top 6 Result Show, all top 6 contestants sang the song "Bendera" from their album and the background on the main screen was the video clip of the song.

On the top 6 Result Show, it was announced the bottom two rather than the usual bottom three. Dimas finally got voted off after 5 times consecutively was placed in the bottom three or bottom two. Dimas is the only contestant of all spectacular show contestants from all 4 seasons who had the most record to be in the bottom three of two (5 times) consecutively before getting voted off.

On the top 5 Result Show, 4 alumna of Indonesian Idol (Delon (runner-up of season 1), Lucky (6th place on season 1), Mike (winner of season 2), and Judika (runner-up of season 2)) performed as guests. They were all named 'Idol Divo' which is likely adopted from Il Divo who were found by Simon Cowell one judges of American Idol and Pop Idol. Fandy was voted off at this point leaving the formation of 1 male and 3 females on the top 4. This is exactly the same formation as in season 1.

Withover 10,000 viewers at Istora Senayan during the Grand Final, it doubled the projection of the producer. Claimed as the largest, most glorious and the best Grand Final of all Idol shows, it beat American Idol in terms of stage size, design, lighting, and sound system. For the first time in history, Rini, one of the Grand Finalist (later become the winner), had the chance to sing with Indonesia's music divas, Titi DJ and Krisdayanti.

Rini along with the other top 12 also performed at the closing ceremony of the Asian Cup at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

[edit] Controversy

  • Joy (The winner of the first season) ceased all ties with Fremantle Media and the Indonesian Idol franchise within weeks of her win due to contractual disagreements between Joy and the show's management Indomugi Pratama. This included a six-year contract with Sony BMG and several appearance commitments including singing at local malls. Joy found this offensive to the Idol title. All traces of her Idol journey were removed from the official site.
  • Before Joy, Helena (the third runner-up from the first season) resigned from Indonesian Idol, just several days before the final, and made her first solo album called Keajaiban Cinta. The album made a huge success at the market, and had a Gold Platinum status.
  • During the Workshop Round of Season 5, many contestants said "Saya sudah berusaha.." ("At least I have tried...") or "Apabila saya diberi kesempatan untuk minggu depan, saya akan ..." ("If people give me the chance to stay here for another week, I will...") when they received negative feedbacks from the panels. This stirred up some rumors among fans that it might have been scripted. Many fans also believe it was also a self defense used by the contestants to keep their images

[edit] Trivia

  • On season 1, there were 11 contestants on the stage, rather than the usual 10 for the first season. Because of that, the first show eliminated 2 contestants (who were Andika and Suci)
  • Because of having Appendicitis on the top 7 of season 1, Nania got a free-pass of not getting voted-off that week, leaving the top 7 week with only 6 contestants competing on the stage. At that time, Bona was voted-off. If she did not get over the week after, she would get voted off automatically. Fortunately, one week later, on the top 6 show, Nania was back singing "Bilang Saja" by Agnes Monica. She said she did not want to get voted-off because she got sick, if she really had to get voted-off, she preferred it was people's decision.
  • It was announced on season 1's grandfinal that the total votes which came in during the grandfinal was over 4 million.
  • On season 2, there were 9 male contestants and 3 female contestants. Because of the 'uncommon' composition, season 2 was the only season which had all-male top 3.
  • Unlike the system on American Idol which there is no Wild-Card on the 6 boys - 6 girls top 12 system, on Indonesian Idol there are 2 seats for 2 wild-card finalists (1 boy and 1 girl). Therefore the workshop round left with 5 boys and 5 girls. Then the judges picked another 4 eliminated contestants to get a second chance to be in the top 12. After the nation-wide vote, these 4 were narrowed to only 2 who then were lucky to be in the top 12. This system was used on season 3 through 5.
  • On season 3's spectacular shows, each contestant who stood on the left of the bottom three or two got eliminated.
  • After Depe (Season 3) got voted off and while she was singing for the last time, she fell off the stage.
  • Dimas (season 4) holds the record of most being placed in bottom three or two before getting voted off (5 times). He is followed by Helena (season 1), Glen (season 2), Maya (season 2), Harry (season 2), Sisi (season 3), Dirly (season 3) and Ihsan (season 3) each was placed 4 times.
  • Season 4 also has the most contestants who never being placed in the bottom three before on its top 5 with 3 contestants (Fandy, Rini, and Wilson). It is followed by season 1 with 2 contestants (Nania and Delon), season 2 also with 2 contestants (Mike and Judika).
  • Two contestants were voted-off after singing Delon's songs (runner-up of season 1) who were Julian (on top 7) who sang "Dunia Tanpa Lagu" and Fandy (on top 5) who sang "Merindumu".
  • On the top 5 Result Show, 4 alumna of Indonesian Idol (Delon (runner-up of season 1), Lucky (6th place on season 1), Mike (winner of season 2), and Judika (runner-up of season 2)) performed as guests. They were all named 'Idol Divo' which is likely adopted from Il Divo who were founded by Simon Cowell one of the judges of American Idol and Pop Idol
  • On the grand-finale of every season, them who sang the winning song in a more upbeat version than their rivals, would win the show. Joy, Mike, Ihsan and Rini sang the winning song in a more upbeat version than Delon, Judika, Dirly, and Wilson. In addition, they also sang the winning song before their rivals.
