Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology or IITM is a scientific institution based in India for expanding research in monsoon meteorology of the tropics in general with special reference to monsoon meteorology of India.
IITM was established by the United Nations Development Programme as a Special Fund Project at Pune on November 17, 1962. It was a part of the India Meteorological Department. Initially called the Institute of Tropical Meteorology (ITM), the Government of India gave it an autonomous status with a new name as the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) on April 1, 1971. The institute functions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India.
