The Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong or RGIIM is a Business School being setup by the Government of India in the state of Meghalaya. It is the seventh and youngest in the line of Indian Institutes of Management that are generally considered to be among the best business schools in India. It is named after former Prime Minster, Rajiv Gandhi and the foundation stone of the institute was laid by Shri Arjun Singh, HRD Minister on December 1, 2007[1].

Setting up IIMs and Central Universities in smaller cities and less developed Indian States has been a policy of the Indian Government for some time.
The director of IIM Shillong is the illustrious Prof. Ashoke K Dutta who himself is an alumnus of IIM Calcutta. Educated in Calcutta at the St. Xavier's College and the Indian Institute of Management. Prof. Ashoke K Dutta was on the Ph.D. programme in management at the Case Western Reserve University, USA for two years. He has worked for more than 30 years in Multinational Corporations, Indian Business Houses and Public Sector Enterprises. He has experience in industry such as Shipping & Transport, Fast Moving Consumer Products, Pharmaceutical, Media and Education.
It was after a long drawn tussle with neighbouring state Assam that Meghalaya was granted the first IIM in North East India. The government of Meghalaya has allocated around 120 acres (0.49 km²) of land for the construcion of a permanent campus in Shillong. A temporary campus has been set up at the Mayurbhanj complex of the North Eastern Hill University for the new IIM. A permanent campus will come in the new Shillong township later.
The temporary campus boasts of complete Wi-Fi connectivity, plush new infrastructure, state of the art computing facilities which includes Video Conferencing for vitrual classroms delivered by Professors of international repute from across the globe. The facilities will also allow students to be part of virtual "live" classes from the comfort of their hostel rooms if they are unable to be present in the physical classrooms owing to sickness or injury.
With the unplundered lap of nature coupled with world class management education and latest technology at their disposal, students are sure going to make a beeline for the first IIM of the 21st Century.

The inaguration of IIM Shillong is slated for July 4, 2008 and will play second home to the first batch of 60 post graduate students who will make their way into the prestigious institute, part of the elite IIMs - rated as the best management schools in India.

IIM Shillong will initially offer the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) and then in the future offer other courses like the Fellow Program in Management (FPM).

Admission to will be through the Common Admission Test in November, 2007[2]. RGIIM, like the other IIMs will not have any admission reservations for students from Meghalaya or North East India[3].
[edit] Post-Graduate Program In Management
The Institute offers the Post-Graduate Programme in Managment [PGP], which is a two year full time residential programme for graduate students from all disciplines wanting to choose acareer in management.
The Post Graduate programme will commence from the academic session 2008-09 in the temporary accommodation at Mayurbhanj Palace, which has been renovated by state Government for the purpose.The Institute envisages for its flagship programme, namely, Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM), an annual student intake capacity of 60 in the first year. This is planned to be subsequently increased up to 120 in the third year and 180 in the sixth year
