Idw-pui stands for "Image deletion warning - possibly unfree images".
Whenever an image is listed on Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images, this template should be placed on the uploader's user talk page. It is used like this: if the name of the image is 123.gif, then {{idw-pui|123.gif}} should be included. Remember not to include the "Image:" before the image name.

- A quick note, the template was changed some time ago to require the use of "Image:" before the image name. I'm thinking about creating some form of linked templates, one which uses Image: and one that doesn't. But that's a project for later. :) kmccoy (talk) 6 July 2005 01:50 (UTC)

When an image is listed on Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion, Template:idw should be used instead. When the image is listed there for being an unverified orphan, Template:idw-uo should be used. And when the image is listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems, Template:idw-cp should be used.
[edit] Using templates with its own header
Keep in mind when a template generates its own header, you should ALWAYS use the subst: prefix when using a template especially in user talk pages!! When a template generates its own header and a substitute is not used, the edit link next to the header will link to the actual template! I just added the four tildes to the end of this template again, which I see now (after looking at the history) is just one of many edits made to this template in the last few months which go back and forth, adding the tildes and removing them again. I added them to make the usage of this template match the usage of {{idw}}, and because the usage guidelines in {{pui}} and Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images#Instructions don't include tildes, thus implying that the signature is automatically generated by the template. I don't really care whether the tildes are here or not, but it should be consistent between {{idw}} and {{idw-pui}}, and the usage instructions should reflect the "tildeness du jour". —Bkell (talk) 05:56, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
