If you note the 12 sources for the article, not one of them is a tabloid, they are all serious US and Israeli publications. The affair surrounding the allegations was very significant for a large number of major Jewish leaders (including clearly Gafni, a celebrity and TV host in Israel) and led to the collapse of a major Jewish organisation, Edah.
